USB ALDL PROM Dump

Anyone know if there is any software out there to get a PROM dump through a USB cable? ECM852 doesnt seem to like USB which is the only port my laptop has.

You could try my aldl gui for the 4kb nvsram hack.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...ghlight=nvsram

You will need to edit the eprom offset/size though, because it was written for a the $8D mask. Open the program with a text editor and do the following:

change this line:
set buffer [aldlByteRead $_serialPortSpawnId 8000 32768]

to this:
set buffer [aldlByteRead $_serialPortSpawnId C000 16384]

Does your USB cable already work with TunerPro or some other data logger? Only a select number of them work with the aldl baud rate.

What is the 4-letter code on the chip on the memcal in the ECM? I'd be willing to bet the bin can be found on the Internet without needing to pull it from the chip yourself.

Pull the ECM out (from the passenger side under-dash kick panel), pull off the little cover (held on with 2 screws), and pull out the memcal. Pull the blue cover off of the memcal and tell us what the 4-letter code is. Should take you 5 minutes (10 at most).

The cable appears to work with tunerpro though ive only just got it and havent had a great deal of time to play with it yet. I changed the chip a few months ago to this:3rd° Tech Tips~TSB~Bugged PROM - the 1228291 Calibrator. The old chip was the ANYXXXX but was pretty rough. Big improvement when i put the new one in so i was hoping to get a copy of it to put on the ostrich and play with.

Yeah i should have looked at the code on it before i put it in but i had been waiting a month for it to arrive so i just chucked it in with excitement. Guess i'll just have to get the code when i hook the ostrich up on the weekend and hope its in a bin library somewhere.... or give MonteCarSlow's idea a go though im not too confident in my computer skills.

How do i know if that is one of the revised proms and not one of the bugged ones? if that bin came from an old chip before it was revised it will be like going back to my original which was no good.

ive got an 89 bin as well. maybe i should just unplug the CSI and use that. I was hoping for a copy of my current prom to compare to the 89 but beggers cant be choosers.

AUM is AUM. If what I pointed you to is the real AUM, then it's the same, otherwise it would likely be a differnet BCC.

Also, you're going to do your own tuning now. All you need is a baseline. For your $32 (that's the mask ID your car uses), I'd recommend updating to $6E instead anyway.

Does the fact that my current mask is obviously 32 but the datastream definition in tunerpro is 6e? Cos i didnt see a 32 for the 1227165, only a 160baud.

Mangus you are right. It was AUM and now that the ostrich is installed, it runs as well as the actual GM chip.

Now that i know it works, next weekend's project will be trying to convert to 6e

Cool. Conversion to 6E is easy.

1) Pick a 6E that most closely matches your setup. Use ANZA for a 5-speed, for instance.

2) Disable VATS in the 6E bin (it's a check box in the flags)

3) Upload the bin to the Ostrich (or burn it to your chip)

4) Unplug your cold start injector.

And that's it!

I ended up having a go at it yesterday. Got it going first time then couldnt get it to start the second time.... turns out i forgot to save it when i turned the vats off

Ah well, its only a 5 minute job to do again. Im going to use the bin from a stock 89 305 auto.

Well I tried both the 86 and 89 stock proms and the 86 seemed to go a bit better. The 89 set off a code 44 though it looks like the 86 prom would have come close to the same code. Files are attached if anyone is interested in helping diagnose the problem. 1st is 86 in 32 mask, 2nd is the 89 in 6e.
