in need of software wizz!
I asked tunercat if they would be making a definition file for my other car. they said they had no plans to do so. so what I want to know...is there any way to create your own.
On TC's website, there is a 5 meg file called the Editor that you make a calibration file with-but you have to know where all the locations are in the chip for all the parameters you want to change.
I used it to add a code delete for 52 (EOT low) and since I am running a Vette bin in a 730 ECM, I didn't pin in for this sensor.
Using the trial version, I made changes to the TDF that I already had, but there is some kind of problem either related to that change, the checksum that was calculated, or I just have 2 bad new chips by some strange coincidence (throws me into limp home as soon as either of them goes in). Too early for me to tell, so I can't say for certain what the problem is.
WINBIN lets you make your own file too. Just depends on whether or not you already have TC. -Matt-

You can build an ecm bench and the try *crashing* the chip, by looking thru it and make a change and watch a scan tood to see if the change was as you expected.
Programming 101 at DIY-EFI is about just brute forcing a hac. If you read thru a couple hacs you see there is some logic to the madness.

grumpy, I could do this to a point. so are you saying that if I use $42 to start with mess with something and see what happens?
now with that said I should start from what is trying to be done all together. (1st)I have a 90 grand am DOHC quad 4 (vin D) I would love to tweek the timming and bump up the rev. limmiter.
now (second) at work we seem to get all these other shops with quad four cars and will have a (vin D) prom in a (vin A) car and (A in a D) but, at best they will idle like this. so I was hopeing I could copare the two and see what they did. Vin A in tuner cat says it is a $3F ecm and Vin D says it is a $59 ecm now this if true may prove very help full because the only differance between these two are...
VIN A(H.O.) VIN D
cam. I. .410 I. .340
E. .410 E. .350
these are for 88-90
I can not find the exact numbers at this time but, I belive VIN A has 9.0:1 comp. and VIN D has 8.0:1 . this should be the only differance beside the VIN A having a larger and cast E. manifold.
I would really like to see how GM goes about changing the prom for a bigger cam and higher comp. ect. and why they show up as two differant ecms.
and as something I had just noticed I put a 91 eng VIN D in the car and for 91 It shows that I have a cam with I. .375 and E. .375 every thing else is the same so I may even have to adj. for that as well.

I did some brief checking and it appears that your car uses a "707" ECM. As the market for TDFs (and prom burning) is probably quite limited for that ECM, you're very likely on your own.
Another alternative might be to convert your car to run a different ECM. The 7730 ECM used by SD F-bodies has the ability to have the eprom set to run a 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engine. So you might want to consider converting to that ECM and then you could just use the $8D TDF.
I am sure that if you were to "crack" your BIN that you'd find a fair amount of similarities to the 7730 (if the 707 is MAP based). But, as Bruce said, to crack and document your ECM is a very time consuming project and would require a great deal of knowledge in Assembly Language Programming.
The conversion route seems a lot faster and easier in my mind. This is what a few of the V6 guys are looking at since certain years don't use the same BIN (or ECMs sometimes) as the V8 cars and it is highly doubtful anyone will develop a TDF for them.

the grand am has a very simple system for eng. controls it does use a map and I think you are right glenn, I was thinking of doing that to the formula but perhaps I will do both.
It still would be nice to know what gm had done for the change in lift and comp. as this might have an impact on how I may look at tunning.
oh I almost forgot the quad 4 uses a crank pick up instead of using the dis. this maybe the big problem of the whole swap.

I didn't realize they used a crank pickup. That will most likely pose a problem. Does it also have sequential fuel injection too? I don't know much about those Quad 4s.
