Looking into PROM burning again ....

I took a hiatus for a little while to catch up on some other stuff (house, kids, whatnot) and now I'm looking into burning PROMs again. I was looking at a stock 89 bin w/ an 89 ECU file and noticed a variable having something to do with Rev limiting. It was set to 10,000 or so RPM and off at 9,800 RPM or so.

I have an 88 with the same ECM and was curious to know, does this variable work? I think I would be interested in limiting my revs to 6,000 if possible. Does that variable work?

Yep, GM did have a rev limiter in the third-gen TPI cars, although they never implemented it (like the Highway Mode stuff), so they set the values out of a normal operating range. The rev limiter works very well. I think it saved my engine when I was at the strip a few months ago. While running up in 2nd gear, the tranny started slipping really bad and the engine was bouncing off the rev limiter (set at 6k rpm at the time) something fierce, like the tranny was in neutral instead of drive. You can change the rev limiter in GMEPro, TunerCat, or WinBin. If you're looking at burning your own, switch to the $6E code ('89 model year) and start with the ARAP bin (but watch out for the aggressive spark advance).

Yeah, it was suggested to use the 89 bin in my 88 ECM and it would work fine. I think the Mask Calib on mine is $32B and the 89 is $6E ... no problems right? Same physical ECM, different calibrations.

Thanks. I'll look into the spark advance stuff as well. I'm starting to get back into it but never really messed with the spark advance stuff or any of that. Just reading up.
