re-flash chip while still in ECM??

I want to build an interface that will allow me to re-flash my SST27SF512 while it is still installed in the ECM. If I run a ribbon cable from the chip to my Willem programmer, correct pin arangement of course, with Key Off on the ECM could I reflash it without physically removing it from the ECM, or will other ECM circuitry cause problems or potential damage anything??

I know there are the NVS module, and emulation and such..but I wondering if this would work. anyone tried it?

Bad idea, for various reasons. Here are two:

1/ the voltage applied to Vcc of the SST27SF512 is > 5.0V during the erase cycle

2/ the Vcc pin, which needs to be powered, would in effect power up the entire ECM....

Emulator alternative

A ZIF socket makes chip swaps a breeze. I suppose you could use a ribbon cable to extend the socket outside of the ECU if necessary. Fwiw an emulator is money WELL spent.
