The unleaded world...... Not what you think

I spent the last couple days trying to find some Kester Soldering + Flux......
No one, but, no one, seems to carry anything with lead in it around here.

Maybe, the regular component houses do, but the only store around here with it in stock was www.partsexpress.com

Just a FWIW

solder without lead is just bulls**t

i´m working in R&D of a big welding company, we have big time troubles with the new lead free solder....

its very aggressive on soldering baths, soldering irons, aso, also, the soldered connection look gray, like a "cold" connection....

i've been experimenting with the different varieties of lead-free solder, and they are all a bit lesser in terms of final appearance in my opinion. They don't flow quite as nicely.

If you crank the temperature up a bit, maybe +50 deg F from what you normally would work with on the lead-based, they do OK.

If anyone needs some lead-based solder, just let me know. I've got a couple dozen pounds kicking around.

Lead free solder is like a ***** house without the naked ladies. Theres also the issue of whisker formation from what I hear. Thank god I stole a couple reels of REAL solder awhile back. Im going to buy some more leaded solder tonight. I never really did like the lead free solder. Its like decafinated coffee.

In my book, if it cant kill you, cause cancer, brain damage, and doesnt punch a hole in the ozone layer, then it usually doesnt work the way it should.

I'll be sure to bring a sihtload back from China next time I come back then (actually coming back tomorrow for a short vacation, but just spent the day in Hong Kong, and leave in the morning, so no chance to buy any).

Where is the lead free solder being sold? is it everywhere in the US?

Parts Express has the leaded stuff.
I just couldn't find any locally.

Some Radio Shacks in the area had some as of a few weeks ago.

I'm gonna try and find some now that this has come up.

Tended to be the non remodeled stores or the ones that are remodeled and havent gone thru all the old stock yet.

later

4 radio Shack stores were tried, only one was *new*.
Be sure to get some Rosin based flux.
BTW, Kester Formula *44* is my pick for good solder.

It depends on what I am soldering as to which solder I prefer. For standard PCB work, I like rosin flux cored eutectic (?sp) solder (63% tin, 37% lead) since it has a lower melting point and tends to flow in the smaller holes better. When I am soldering power transistors or other high current devices, I like good ole 60/40 solder and brush on flux. The joints are not as likely to go "cold" as easily. JMHO
