Spontanious knocks?

I've been using a spark advance table that is a lot less aggressive, and my knocks went down from 200 in a 10 mile drive, to about 40....... however, now when i get knocks if i floor it, at about 3000 rpm instead of the knock counts coming up steady like 1 by 1, they just go from 0-30 in a second...... and i am getting timing retard when that happens, should i be afraid of this?

ps
(i was still getting timing retard before i changed the spark table values when the engine knocked)

I'm certainly no expert, but I would expect that if the ECM pulled out enough timing, you shouldn't be getting any further increases in knock counts.

What was your ECM # again? In the 7730, there's a value for the amount of knock retard that the ECM has at it's diposal. On mine, I have it set at 5° and it seems to work pretty good. I may get a couple of counts here and there even during aggressive driving.

Also in the 7730, there's a knock retard rate you can set as well. I forget what mine is, but you can increase the reaction rate of the ECM. Again, though I only have experience with the 7730.

Are you performing the WOT test at the same RPM as before? What's the RPM and what is your WOT timing at that RPM?

Re: Spontanious knocks?

well i'm not sure about which computer i have but i am sure that the so called 'spontanious knocks' that i got, was becuase the computer i was using must have started slowing down or something because at the time of the knocks, my mph goes from like 6mph to 40 in one second, so i dont think its a big problem, the computer i have i think was just slowing down..... ugh but thanks.

i just have the stock computer for a 1989 Formula 305 TPI..... i'm not sure what it is
