Emulating problems

I am using a USB Autoprom with windows XP sp 2 and I am having some issues emulating. I am trying to tune my new motor and it is running extremly rich. When I try emulating I can usually get into it for about 30 sec-1 min before the engine dies the SES light comes on and the fans run. It will not restart. It is like when you have a chip failure and it goes into limp mode. If I burn a chip with the same BIN it runs fine with no problems. I am ready to pull my hair out...I just want to get this thing running right. I would appreciate any help.

Re: Emulating problems

does this happen when your emulating & make a change to the bin?
when it does this, are you re-upload the whole bin, or do you use the update tab on what you changed?

i ask because i have problems like that if i try to re-upload. just updating the part i changed works fine for me.

Re: Emulating problems

I can make the change hit update and it will continue to run for a while then out of no where it will just cut off. I pulled out my emulation cable last night and for some reason it looked like one of the pins was pushed up into the connector further than the rest. I pulled the pin back down so it is even with the rest and I am going to try it again later. Hopefully this is all that was wrong. I have emulated with the Autoprom in the past with no issues so maybe I will get lucky.

Re: Emulating problems

Yeah, that's probably your problem. I'm using the Ostrich and have never see anything like you're encountering unless I re-upload an entire bin. That will usually make it die, but it always restarts just fine for me too.

Re: Emulating problems

Well I went home on my lunch break and screwed with it some more. It doesn't look like that was it. If I send a bin to the Autoprom and do not emulate or datalog it runs without a hitch. When I start emulating and making changes about 30 sec afterwards it dies and the fans run. For example I changed some values in my VE table, hit update, runs for 20-30secs, dies, fans come on and will not restart. It's getting frustrating. It ran for a couple minutes before I started messing with it.

Re: Emulating problems

Is it in closed loop and idling fine before an update? I'm trying to see if the closed loop is coming in and that's what's killing it. Try letting it idle for 5-10 minutes and get totally up to temp on the original uploaded BIN and see if it dies.

Re: Emulating problems

Nope its not killing it when it goes into closed loop either runs fine. I am ready to throw this Autoprom out! I even tried it with the key on eng off. I enabled emulation and changed something and almost immediatly the fan relay clicked and the fans came on, tried to restart while it did it and nothing. I would reload the bin to the emulator (key off and on) and then verify it always failed. I disconnected the ribbon cable from the back of the autoprom and uploaded and verified and it would verify good every time. What gives??? Why does it run fine off the emulator without emulation enabled??? I have even tried updating both Tunerpro RT and the firmware.

Re: Emulating problems

Hi Jon,

This is almost always due to the check-box under TunerPro RT Tools/Preferences not being checked on the "Disable checksum by uploading AA at 08".

For most of the 27C128/27C256 programs, it should be set to AA at 08.

For most of the 2732A programs, it should be set to AA at 04 or AA at 05.

For the 27C512 programs, it is usually AA at 4008.

By checking this box, it tells the software to disable checksum enumeration. That way, when you make changes, the vehicle's PCM won't get all pissed with you.

You could also try switching over to another firmware version for the AutoProm. On my website, under the documentation section, there's a place for Firmware Updates. There, you'll find the 2.75.A version, which uses a slightly less aggressive emulation strategy. It might be worth a shot if you're having problems verifying.

Hope this helps,
-Craig
