Your opinion please

Hello Third Gen F body forum. I'm a newbie looking for some good advice. I have been researching DIY prom burning for quite some time now and have decided to give it a shot. It is clear that there are alot of talented members here. You probably get these type of questions alot so I will apologize ahead of time - a forum search didn't help.

I plan to modify my 7747 ecm and need to get set up with the right equipment. I'm on a budget so I want to do this as economically as possible without sacrificing function and effectiveness. I know I can go to Moates and get what I need but that is probably one of the most expensive options. I need to buy a PROM burner, cable, EPROM or PROM, and a socket. What would you recommend? I read somewhere on this site that someone picked up a burner for $15 on e bay recently.

Thanks.

Re: Your opinion please

Personally its all preference...I am EXTREMELY pleased with everyone I have purchased equipment from with no problems what so ever.

I got my cable from AKM electronics.
My editor and definition file I got from from Tuner Cat.
My Pocket Programmer, UV eraser and 2 spare chips were from Transtronics.

Within one week of placing the order I had everything in my hand and for no more than it would have cost for a custom chip.

There are many more reputable vendors out there and its a preference like I said, but I went with the above and I'm very satisfyed. Read the stickies, search the posts...theres a TON of info here and the guys are great. Good luck.

Thanks Brandon, it appears that I was mentally challenged when I was looking for info before. I found what I was looking for in the stickies.

Thanks again.

I don't know that Moates is that more expensive than other places, but I do know that he really backs up his products.
I see it like this, you can shop around (ebay, the classifieds, etc.) and buy used products, or companys just trying to make a buck, and save money now, but what if that item becomes defective? Then you are boned and have to buy another, therefore spended more money in the long run. Or you can spend a little money now, and then in the unlikely event your item becomes defective, you can talk with Craig and he will mostlikely exchange your item for a new one.

I agree 110%. Craig is a great guy to deal with. Back when AT29C256 chips were the hot thing, I had one DEAD out of the box. I mentioned the inoperative chip to him while placing an order for 5 more chips. The order came in with 6 new chips and an invoice for 5. I vote Craig Moates all the way.
