Best Setup
Hey guys, I'm a proud new owner of a '89 Iroc and not a lot in my car is stock
Im looking for a good platform to start programming my own chips.
I have a 350 bored .040 over
"supposedly" stock L98 cam (it sounds very lopey for stock) yet its hyd. roller
What seems to be LT4 heads (not sure about reverse cooling)
TPI setup with all free mods and siamesed runners/TPIS bigmouth manifold
Borg warner t-5 tranny with 3.08 gears.
Also i have a Hypertech chip that is for a 350 with a Auto tranny which idles high
1) What are some effective setups used by TGO members
2) Does anyone have a simular setup they can help me with
3) Will anyone be willing to mentor me with specifics.
Thanks!

After you read through them then you will prolly have more specific questions.

Re: Best Setup
I've read the thread, I was simply wondering which route many users went and what their experiences are
Re: Best Setup
Well, before you dive in read up on MAF to SD conversion and decide if you want to switch first before you learning the ins and outs of the MAF system.
You might consider buying a book by John Baechtel called "Chevy TPI Fuel Injection Swapper's Guide" I have it an have learned somethings from it.
I think most guys on here are using Moate's Products and tuning with TunerPro or Tuner Cat.

Re: Best Setup
from what ive read, its easier to leave my MAF and just tune with it. The hypertech i have now is very glitchy when it comes to running at optimal spec's such as every time i start the car (cold or hot) it'll idle at 2000-2300 rpm for a 20 seconds or so, granted the car is stopped. I have several mods and the computer isnt compensating for very much
Re: Best Setup
Yes you can stick with the MAF system, just wanted to point out that you can convert, some do because of the fact that MAFs are somewhat fragile and pricey to replace.
No to decide if you want to program chips (i.e. BURN1), emulate (i.e. Ostrich), or both (i.e. AutoProm).
BURN1 only programs (aka burns) chips.
Ostrich is and emulator, it acts like a chip and you can make changes to the program and you can tune your car in realtime.
AutoProm burns/reads chips, datalogs, and emulates all in one.
With all of the above you will need a chip adapter (G1, G3, GP1, or GP3 depending on the other items you choose). BURN1 and Ostrich you will need a datalog cable (Xtreme ALDL + CABL1). With the BURN1 and AutoProm you will need a chips.
All these can be purchased at www.moates.net, there are others out there but most prefer Moates produts.
I have already bought G1 adapter, Ostrich and Datalog cable. Being here in Iraq I have gotten to use any of it yet, but i know that when I get home I will be constantly messing with this stuff, that why I decided to not go the chip burning route. If you are one that can be content with a single program then you could go with the BURN1 or AutoProm and a GP1 Adapter, find the tune you like, burn it, install it and leave it be. The "problem" with the BURN1 is that to make changes you constantly have to install the chip, test drive, pull the chip, make changes, burn it, intall the chip, test drive.... Emulation you can tune on the fly.
I don't know if thats the kinda answer you are looking for but that may give a better idea of whats out there for DIY tuning.
