Ostrich problems
Help me out here guys. Ostrich / TunerproRT / '165
Trying to tune my fresh 383.
Started new engine with old ARAP based memcal I had with my 350/ZZ4 setup.Stock injectors
Started straight up , rich CL idle (LS1 injectors) but ran/ drove fine.Ran 12.6 with TPI.Have HSR to fit but TPI was just to run engine in.
Trying to fine tune with Ostrich.Tunes load and are verified.Loaded file shows no difference when compared.
When I start car ,instant clouds of black smoke; hardly runs.
Have loaded various 32E and 6E tunes ;same result.Raising injectors to 35lb made no difference to idle smoke.
Put anyone of my memcals (6E and 32E ) in and car idles /revs perfect.
Obviously rich, can smell fuel but no smoke.
Any ideas appreciated.
Ostrich faulty?

Re: Ostrich problems
Check for the SES blink at key-on, engine-off. No blink, the ECM is running in limp mode (off of the RFD). If it blinks then it is running from the ostrich.
Cable in correctly, switches set correctly?

Re: Ostrich problems
Staggered jumpers as per Craig's site.
I know it is taking the "tune" because if I run it long enough the fan runs at my
new programmed settings.

Re: Ostrich problems
OK, sounds good. If you are using an adaptor such as Moates G1, are you placing a MEMCAL onto the open pins? This is required to set the proper injector firing rate. Otherwise I'm not sure what is causing the issue.

Re: Ostrich problems
Was of the belief that all one had to do was to install G1 adapter.
Have not read anywhere in the tuning guides of requirement to have stock memcal attached.
Have just re-read Craig's install notes and see mention of "memcal needed for limp home and spark retard".
Asked question as to purpose of pins on G1 last week but no one mentioned the need for memcal
So the Ostrich will not work on it's own?
Thanks for your help.
Off to EFI Tuning 102 now that the car is seeing the Ostrich

Re: Ostrich problems
I'm pretty sure you need the memcal installed for things to work properly, Ostrich or not. The reason you need the "proper" memcal is because the resistors present in there also help run the car in event of PROM failure. I've used a G3 adapter from Moates (the AMD 29F040? switching one) and a G1 (if that is the basic one) with my Ostrich with no problem. Always attached the memcal though..

Re: Ostrich problems
Just that I never read anywhere of the requirement and even in the Ostrich thread of the sticky above Craig says"
1) You hook up a chip adapter and the Ostrich to your car's ECM, like a 1227730 or similar.
2) You plug it into a USB cable, and tuck everything away with the USB cable hanging out.
3) You hook the USB cable to your laptop, and you use TunerPro or TunerCat to upload a program to your Ostrich.
