Cold Idle Timing

ECM 730 map While idling still in open loop, first start in the morning
How much timing do you run and your nb o2 sensor what mv
shows up say 40-50 degrees F

Anyone can you just tell me what your cold open loop
timing is

Re: Cold Idle Timing

20-25 would be normal ish spark advance at idle. If you mean the amount of timing offset vs coolant temp, then maybe +3 to 6. Assuming a moderate cold day.

O2 probably would read rich (600-900mV) if it's before closed loop, after the engine has run for a minute or so (such that the O2 sensor outputs a voltage other than 450mV, and still open loop). If you have AIR injection, probably would read lean (100-250mV).

This is just roughly what it could be if things are in the ballpark, and a mild engine build.

So at 40-50 degrees F in open loop you would have around 30 degrees in
timing, would 40 degrees be way to much and my iac counts are at 160

Re: Cold Idle Timing

Yeah, 40 is way too much, and IAC counts so high means the throttle blades should be opened a bit. What temperature is the IAC at 160?

Are you sure it's getting 40 degrees? Or are you just adding up numbers from tables in your head? I.e. is the data log showing 40 or are you seeing the coolant spark table having 20 (which is actually 0) added to the normal idle timing of 20 ish.

Data log shows 40. I changed coolant spark comp table and got
them down to 32 33 degrees. 160 steps is when it's in open loop
about 50 degrees F. I will open the throttle blades some, when it
went into closed loop steps on the IAC were 50 at idle. When
warmed up I will get them to about 5-10 steps, does that sound
about right?

Re: Cold Idle Timing

yes, even less timing should be ok too, like mid 20's.

Re: Cold Idle Timing

Thanks for your help, anything else I should know
to get a good cold open loop idle?

Re: Cold Idle Timing

Use a wideband and calibrate the warmup enrichment to net about 13-13.5:1 for the cooler idle areas. Has to be performed on a dead cold start though (minimum 8 hours cool down time). AIR should also be plugged during that test.
