Starting Point?

I'm working on my first efi tuning project, still gathering all of the pieces. I have a 727 ecm and a not yet assembled 406 small block with a holley single plane efi manifold. I've put the specs into Performance Trends Engine Analyzer and it can be manipulated to give you VE and manifold vacuum at most of the table points. The lower VE table can only be half filled in, the empty points are a guessing game to start.

My first question is, has anyone tried this method to tune an engine? The program is supposed to be very accurate and the VE is how they get the performance numbers.

Second question, Ive seen the Moates ROMulator online, is it worth the money?

Re: Starting Point?

Actually, Grim Reaper has done what you mention. IIRC, he has used this method as a starting point for the VE tables. Then fine tuned from there.

I believe the ROMulator to be an Xtronics product.

Re: Starting Point?

You're right, Moates has the Autoprom Package that sounds similar. These posts get slightly disjointed on me, my 6 month old is now on the move and needs a constant eye.

Is the ROMulator also a programmer? The website doesn't come out and specifically say if it is or not.

The xdf file for th bin has the Extend VE and Spark tables. Is there any special trick to unlocking these or will they work as long as the values are not all zeroes? I have just downloaded the files from the s-aujp post from yesterday.

Re: Starting Point?

Glad to see another PTI software user, once properly "calibrated" with the real engine, it CAN give accurate indications of the results of changes. Be sure to get the head flow tables right. go conservative on most areas with flow coefficent numbers. I have seen this program simulate a 427 big block to within 5 hp throughout the range of the dyno test, and it even made the right timing and jetting suggestions.
You can also do part throttle testing by greatly reducing the throttlebody CFM to help fill in your VE tables.

Re: Starting Point?

The heads are AFR 195s, so I'm pretty sure about them.

I'm not sure about the exhaust. Its a dual 2.5" Pypes system with an x-pipe. Is there anywhere on the web to get flow numbers or a way to simulate that in PTI. The Pypes website wasn't very helpful.
