setting timing?

hi all

i tried to set the timing on my engine, 396ci, 230/236 cam

i disconnected the set timing connector, the car even doesnt like to idle..so, i brought it up to about 2000rpm, so that the car don´t stall, and got some really erratic readings...

i hooked up EST again, and setted the idle advance to about 27°, that whats in the closed throttle SA tables...(hot)

ECM is a ´727

the car idles fine there, and also is good to drive..

my question now...

is it ok, to set the timing with EST connected to the value thats in the prom for certain rpm? (27° @ 800-1000 rpm)

thank you

Re: setting timing?

Think you need to set it without EST connected..
Is the engine hot when you trying to set the timing at idle ?

Re: setting timing?

I did the same with my old cam ( didnt like the EST unplugged). Put in 30deg in whole SA, removed all adders and set the timing like that, with engine hot.

You will get erratic timing readings at idle in 8D code if you not 0 out the SA vs rpm error tables. Search for a topic about "tuning idle for big cams"

Hi

that sounds good..

in the tune the error tables are zeroed out, it idles perfect, when i set to 27° with EST conn., takes the throttle smooth, everything...

so i´think, it should work!!

greetings

Re: setting timing?

There is no need to run the engine to set the base timing.

See the note here: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1440016

A seven-pin distrib works the same as a mechanical HEI. The DRP occurs when the
shaft-lobes/reluctor-points align exactly. Setting it by eye is usually close enough.
The original HEI design sheets are still here:
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/images_uploaded/MC3334R0.PDF

They provide general backround on how the whole thing works...
