PROM compatability

Hello maybe this is the right place to ask this question???

I have a stock 89 5.7 TPI PROM (AUJM). Can I use this in an 87 ECM (165 style)? Will I still have to worry about VATS functioning?

Thanks for the help.

Re: PROM compatability

The '86 through '89 TPI systems use the same '7165 ECM. So that chip/MEMCAL will work in any of them. VATs will still work with the '89 chip. So if used in a pre '89 tpi f-body the engine won't start.

RBob.

Re: PROM compatability

Thanks RBob. I that's what I needed to know. I will pick up a new ECM.

Also, do you know of a good inexpensive chip burner that can remove VATS and lower my fan turn-on? I've heard of fastchips, but if someone around this board does it, I'd rather put my money there.

Thanks for the help.

Moates.net will have a good burner, and pick up a copy of tunerpro rt while you are there.
Read the threads on tuning, and you'll be on your way.
