$FF = Chip bad or read/saved incorrectly?

This is my first attempt at DIY PROM, so bear with me.
I built the engine, got TunerCat, bought $61 mask for 8746 ECM
Pulled the chip, read it, saved .bin file, opened in TunerCat

I'm getting a promt saying the bin needs to be read with $FF(made sure to search first).
I'm using someone elses reader, which worked find for them a few months ago. So I'm at the conclusion that it was either read, saved wrong, or the chip itself is bad.

I have been able to get the engine to idle... poorly on the stock PROM, and at least broke in the cam.

It's for a Caprice 350, which should at least let the car move once an idle has been established, however it will die when put into gear. Does this mean I am left with 'limp mode'? Justifying my thoughts on the PROM being the culprit?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: $FF = Chip bad or read/saved incorrectly?

Got it taken care of.

"After I thought about it I realized that I saved so much of the eprom burner buffer to the disk. I save a 64K file where the prom is only a 4K prom. So when Tunercat went to open the file it was doing a CRC error check on to large a file so it errored out. I resaved the file down to the correct size and it opens now."

So from this I am gathering that if the .bin file size is larger than it should be, the tuning software will come up with an error.
Posted this up since there was nothing mentioned about it before in case someone else runs into this problem.
