If you really dig in, it comes quicker.
Like everything else, everyone has a different learning curve.
I worked like $$$$ for about 3-4 months before I started realizing I was making progress, and what I was doing was really making sense.
Read the DIY a million times, try it, ask some questions if you get stumped.
You'll never know everthing about it, there's always something else to do.
Don't get dis-hearted. I felt like an idiot for a month or so.

You probally could make some money burning chips for people .
I know i would buy one if you lived close to me !
I envy you guys that have the knowledge to tune .
Thanks for giving me a idea of how much time it would take.

Oh I'm on one month now and the task still seem daunting but just try and get in to the right frame of mine and work your way through it. And read and read and read and read some more.

You never really master tuning, there's always more to learn. But I'd say I really didn't feel I had a good grasp on the whole system until a year. The basics of fuel manipulation and such come pretty easy, but you really have to explore the whole system to correct the little quirks that show up when you tweak things.

I've been doing an hour or two of reading per night for the last 2-3 weeks. I feel I have a decent handle and burned my first chip last night.

That first chip you get burned that works makes you dig in even harder. It's like climbing the highest mountain around.

Good place to start.
Go to moates.net, get a burn1 or burn2, and a copy of tunerpro rt. Pay the 30 dollars for tunerpro, you won't regret it and it helps the programmers.
Download you a copy of the bin file you will be working with, and open it up and see what it looks like. You'll eventually get the hang of it.

The burn 2 is what you put a chip in to read or write it.

Well my first chip was a success. I built it off a mail order tune and there was a lot of room for improvement! It was a conservative tune. I just have to pull some fuel now here and there and I'll be golden. You really can't beat doing it yourself.
