Help me pick a cam? - 383 6speed
Hi guys,
my basic engine spec is L98 short block stroked to 383ci, AFR195 heads and a modified LT1 Intake.
Right now I'm running a Comp Cams 306:
230/244 @ .50 510/540 lift with 1.6RR's 112LSA
I love the way that this cam makes power and it runs really well also the noise is great too! BUT... if I get caught in traffic, especially if its hot out it just becomes a bit of a pig to drive
this is starting to put me off using it so much so it gets sat up which is such a waste! 6th gear is really only of use above 65-70mph right now also which doesn't help in fuel milage! I average 16mpg when I take it easy!
What I'm looking for is some idea's on cams that won't feel to weak compared to what I've got now but give me back my drivability. Just how tame would I have to go? I know theres plenty of people out there running 383's that make good power but drive like stock... what cams are you using?
Dan

I run the 224/230 .05 Comp Cam, largest computer cam for Comp. 350 CID/manual trans. But it is a 114 LSA which helps tuning it as well as helps drivability. At low rpms I still think I have reversion as it seems to add fuel during a VE Learn. Might be cool air temps as well not sure. 114 LSA will give up HP for sure. Trade off.

Something like the 280XFI will give you back your driveability but wont be to hard to tune. Its a 230/236 cam but advertised duration is lower than the CC306 so less total overlap. Plus its on a 113 lsa which helps abit. Its an aggressive lobe design which will make good power but need to match the springs on the heads to this cam. its a good idea to change the springs and cam as a package.
You shouldnt lose any power with this setup but gain driveability. You may even make more power since this cam has more lift.
The XE 282 isnt bad either, its a 230/236 with slightly less aggressive lobes than the XFI. On a 112 lsa it will drive smoother. May make the same power or so.

Re: Help me pick a cam? - 383 6speed
I have the 224/230 XE cam in my engine I just fired. Its a 383, AFR 190s and HSR with 6 spd.
Seems to be fine down low...rumbles along fine at 60 mph in 6th gear(3.42 gears)....so thats about 1500ish RPM..maybe 1400.
I have about 40 miles on it, though...so take this all with a grain of salt.
With the 230/236...I hear another guy that said it went wild at about 3000 rpm....but was a bit sluggish down low.
If I had it to do over again....Lunati said they could grind me a Voodoo cam with a 227/233ish duration...but it would be custom. I'd probably try to find a cam somewhere between the 224/230 and 230/236 Comp cam...but I think my choice will be great for my intended crusing/around town driveability. Thing feels strong...but no enough seat time or tune time to know for sure.
