Windows Mobile & ALDL
There are LOADS of phones out there now with Windows Mobile as the OS. Most of these phones have USB/Bluetooth/Wifi capability... do you think we will see a "TunerPro" or similar for them in the future?
I for one would be very interested in this, even if it was a simple code reader. I don't always have my notebook with me... I ALWAYS have my phone there.
Just thought I would start a discussion on this

Re: Windows Mobile & ALDL
Its certainly possible. Weather or not it happens just depends on how dedicated someone is. My first impression is that this would be pretty difficult because I doubt any of the mobile OSes out right now have the drivers needed to connect the ALDL cable so that it can be used correctly by an application.
Re: Windows Mobile & ALDL
Drivers can be written for the Winmo platform. Once the driver was written, it would likely work on all Winmo phones. No need for a different driver for each phone...
The hangup I see, is that there would have to be a cable developed that would plug into the micro-USB port on these phones.
The way I see it, the cost of developing the drivers, and building the cables, and building the software is cost-prohibitive, as anything besides a hobby project for a techie.
You can buy an old Windows 98/Windows XP laptop with a serial port that has more than enough horsepower to run the software, for well under $50... Serial ALDL cables can be made in under an hour, for about $10 in parts.
USB increases the cost and complexity of building the cable significantly.
Methinks it'd be a slim market of folks who would be willing to shell out the $100+ that it would cost for cable and software, to use on a phone with limited capability and a small screen, to use on cars that are 15-25 years old...
If you want something small that you can always have in the car, I seem to remember there being a cable/software combo for the Palm Pilots, years ago. You could probably find one of those for really cheap, and just throw it in the glovebox, for those times when you are without a computer, and start hankering for a data log...
