DIY prom database

One think I was wondering about when I was looking at the site is why there is no DIY prom database? When I go from my 305 to a 350 I'm going to need a new prom, and instead of programming my own why isn't there pre-built ones on the site?

It would be nice if there was a prom database where you could download pre-built proms for a car. The description would have all of the parts (cam, heads, intake, etc) that the prom was used to tune for. Make sure that all of the bins are of high quality and are good tunes. That way people could just buy the parts on the description for the certain prom, and then download the prom and burn it. It it would make the lives a lot easier for a lot of people that don't know how to code a motor.

Re: DIY prom database

This has always been a good reference for me.
Glad someone mirred it because the original site is gone now.

Cross referenced by ECM and year with different motor codes.

Simply because it wouldn't be DIY.

Technically it still would be because your burning the chip and installing it yourself...

What you're describing sounds like providing what the aftermarket does, except for free. And their concept of buy a bunch of parts, slap them together with so-and-so's tune is why a lot of people end up learning to tune in the first place.

1/2 hour with stickies and search someone should have the shopping list of hardware to tune & burn their own eprom. Or realize they have no desire to learn how and take a different path.

It's not like we're back in the days of early 'Programming 101' TBI hacking where people could barely navigate the internets and "go read the archives" meant hours of combing thru text files and posting to mailing lists.

Re: DIY prom database

I mean I wouldn't mind learning how to do it, I just honestly know nothing about engines. I know nothing about cams, valves, heads, etc. I would have to learn what everything means before I could even code.

Re: DIY prom database

Welcome to the real world...life is (hopefully) a long & arduous journey, that leads to just rewards, (but don't get your hopes too high), not like a video game, or somebody might have told you, no cut & dry can be expected...
If you don't work for it, you should not have it...

Any of us living and enabled stand as mere (beaten & scarred) nats on the shoulders of giants, learn of their experience, the first example they set is hard work & study.

Re: DIY prom database

I was in your situation a few years ago. I presume you have a modded car and the stock prom no longer works for you. I dove into DIY prom tuning and hit a few bumps in road. I did not ask for a prom and not suggesting you are either. I asked a lot of questions first tuning year and found many members are pleased to help. Eventually it was learned that a member had a modded motor very similar to mine. That member volunteered to look at my DIY.bin and make a few changes. That helped me a lot in drivability. Consider adopting DIY and post a few Q's or many(be specific) and info on your set up. You will receive needed support. If you care not to get involved then there are vendors out there that can help.

Re: DIY prom database

Well right now I have stock setup but in the summer I want to get a 350, which means a tune. I'm probably going to learn to code it myself, but it's not going to be too easy

Well you got that right!

Today is easy as compared to five or ten years ago. But it is still a steep learning curve. If you don't have a deep desire and a lot of time maybe you could just buy a chip from a vendor. Also talk to the vendor first and discuss the motor you want to build and they will guide you to a proven motor build and a tuned chip for it.

And when the chicks show up with their magnets, you can stick them to the front the refrigerator to hold up your DIY notes.

Re: DIY prom database

How 'bout a DIY DIY-PROM database? Doesn't exist? Do it (or create it) yourself. When you add value to lives of community members (irrespective of what community we're talking about), there is often reward.

Bob is our gracious leader. I'm merely a follower, a peon, and even a pee-on.

Well I don't believe that and you have contributed a lot!

But if he and others who are widely regarded as leaders and contributors here agree? I would volunteer the time etc.. necessary to put something like this together as a pay back (or pay forward) for all the fun you guys started!

Or even a follow up to what Moates does and DIY-GM-EFI does...
