Getting into prom tuning
Getting into prom tuning

Well, 1st I want to thank everyone on this forum for providing such a plethora of information for newbies in EFI like myself. Having said that, I have been lurking on this site since I registered b/c I want to learn how to modify the chip to work with my system. I am not new to working on cars, but now that I'm retired I want to use my old school knowledge to dwell into the new technology. Scanning and diagnosing has been my limit with fairly good success.
My project is somewhat 3rdgen related. My 36 Chev is currently powered by a carbed 305/auto which I'm replacing with a 91 F-body 305/700R4. I have the complete harness, 1227730 and two memcals, AWFX for a 5-speed and ARZC for an a/t. I have read just about every thread on this site and others about this subject and so far have two 3" binders full of information extracted from the sticky section and old threads. I am just amazed how much there is to OBD1. Now looking thru available info (3rdgenformula.com), I see numerous production memcal numbers available for the 5.0L/auto.
16153072 BCC ASYT and AUTR.
16163062 BCC ARZC, AWFU and AXXB.
16163075 BCC ARZU, AWFY and AXXF.
I assume these support different eng/trans/tires/axle ratios/etc combination. Anyone know where to find this breakdown?

I want to run the engine on the test stand complete with the modified harness to eliminate items like VATS, EGR (maybe), A/C, 2nd fan and whatever I decide to eliminate. I DO NOT want to buy a harness or have someone reprogram the chip(s). I am getting all Moates equipment, so later on I can fine tune the drive train for cruising, which I do a lot of. I have all the time in the world to play with my toys. There are so many talented people on this site, I have no doubt I can learn to accomplish my goal.
If you missed what I'm after, where can I look for the BCC breakdown.
BTW - I hope I did not break any rules for not having an F-body car.

C.A.T.S CalData Program will get you the info your looking for and more.

Re: Getting into prom tuning
93V8S10 - Thanks for the reply. I can understand the last BCC on each list is the latest:
16153072 BCC ASYT and AUTR.
16163062 BCC ARZC, AWFU and AXXB.
16163075 BCC ARZU, AWFY and AXXF
Since they are all for a 305/auto, then the part numbers 161..... must reflect gear ratios. Since I have a 3.08 ratio, which one should I use to read the memcal and then modify the flags to suit my application? If I read BCC ARZC (the one I have), can I then modify it to AXXF level? Please be patient with me. There must be a reason for the three different part #s.
xch3no2 - Thank you also for the input. I already have those links in my binder and unless I missed it the info I'm after relative to the bcc/ratio is not available. Also the 2nd link at /ludis_obd1 does not include the f-body 305 "F", only 350 "8". Correct me if I'm wrong.
I believe I will be getting TunerPro RT with the package from Moates. Will it have the info I seek (i.e. CalData)?
Again thanks.

Re: Getting into prom tuning
Go to the moates website and create an account. Now you will be able to acess the download page. In there (hidden) is a file called BCC lookup. It has all BCC known to man, may be a little exagerated. If you can't find it PM me your email and I will send you a copy.
Not all BCC are good. I have a book here from SnapOn that shows the issues GM found and replaced the chip so the scan ID changed.

Re: Getting into prom tuning
Mark - Thanks for the xls tip at moates.net, great source. According to some sources, 16163075 is not available but 16163062 is. Three BCCs are covered under part #16163062, mine being the 1st ARZC. Did you say you may have info on the newer revs? I probably should not worry about, since I will be burning a new chip. So if I can get a stock AXXF or the closest to it, I can eliminate all the areas I don't want. I downloaded 8D.xdf and AXXF 8D.bin to study the files and get familiar with the screens and info in front of me, which is confusing at the moment. You gents think I'm on the right track?
Now lets say I burn a chip with a stock unmolested AXXF file, but there's stuff missing like VATS module, smog pump and divert valves, A/C and possibly O2 sensor, will it even start? Comments are welcomed. Thanks.

Well I like helping the begineers so the big boys can keep time for real stuff! So your getting a little ahead of me. But if you can burn a chip you can disable VATS, Smog etc... it will run witout an O2 sensor but will set a code and be in open loop of course.

Mark - I don't know how I'm getting ahead of you, but if I am, just suggest I slow down. I don't have the equipment from moates. I'm delaying the order till I'm ready to do the job. Right now the TPI engine is assembled and mounted in my test stand with the harness partially modified. Once I mock up the harness route for wire lengths to represent final install in the hotrod, then the chip burning starts and run the engine for break-in.

Re: Getting into prom tuning
The VATs will prevent the engine from starting, but the rest is OK. It is best to disable equipment that isn't present. Such as EGR, which will lower the injector PW and add timing. If the EGR isn't present this leads to detonation (pinging).
A.I.R. will also change things. Easy to disable both via the CTS thresholds.

Re: Getting into prom tuning
Rbob - Thanks. I best finish the harness as planned then continue this thread after I receive the equipment. That gives me more time to research and read, read, read. You would think I find more info on hotrod forums doing identical swaps, but most suggest to buy already made harnesses or have someone burn a chip. BUT, if someone as pig headed as me insists on DIY, they always refer to this great forum. I can see why.

Re: Getting into prom tuning
TP-RT needs to be loaded w/all all .bin & xdf/adx files from DIY community or self edited databank.
Not like TunerCat, EFI Live or CalData.
Note: TP-RT works great with RBob's EBL Flash if that is a solution you might consider.
