LS1 programming thread

Probably a dumb idea.
The LS1 programming thread got me thinking. (Dangerous) Why not use a cable TB an HEI and run it with an EBL ?
Distributor drive, below.

Although that is a very cool part! Doing away with DIS ignition is a step backwards...

I like the LS1 ignition also. When I saw the other thread I was thinking about an easy way for guys doing conversions to do their own tuning. I "think" this could be done.

Re: LS1 programming thread

It can be done if you want to just run it like an L98. It will get the LS1 in there, but you'll still have the older HEI ignition and batch fire. The newer ignitions are a huge step up from the old HEI systems. If the car has a 4L60-E, it can be run with a TBI PCM. Probably good if you have an LS1 for a swap, but an existing LS1 car its a step backwards (or two).

I realize its a low tech answer. Just thinking about a buddy, putting a modded LS motor in a Vega. It would be an easy way to get it going. He has a 200 R4 to go behind it. Only needs lock up. Thanks for the input.

Re: LS1 programming thread

instead of using a distributor, have you thought about the MSD LS box?
from my understanding you can tune the spark map with a laptop or use chips for the timing.
i would guess you could use the tach output from the MDS box to the EBL and disable the spark control in the EBL.

Re: LS1 programming thread

I am aware the guys that retrofit an LS with carb use a HEI distributor. Would that require a cam swap for dist gear or maybe not as it feeds the oil pump?

Its part of the kit. The gear that drives the dist. bolts to the front of the cam.
