Open Loop Tuning from cold start
165 ecm with $6e. ARAP.bin
Ok. So what I have a problem is that when starting from a complete cold start, it will fire and kinda do a lopey idle till it can get warmed up at least to 190. Then I can restart the vehicle and it will fire and idle great.
I have started to work with the Open loop % change vs Coolant. For those lower temps. I have been adding quite a bit of change to the 90 thru 178 range. Almost to the same percent as the -18 and 3 range. That seems too much to me. But without being able to read the BLM's, I don't know. My WB shows it is around 13.6. This seems to help the idle on first startup.
My question is, Is this too much to be adding?
Also, in ARAP.bin the startup spark advance vs coolant has no entries in it at all. But I see that in several other bin's that I have downloaded, that they have some advance to it.
Could I try advancing some of the startup spark advance to see if that will help?
Thanks for the information in advance.

Re: Open Loop Tuning from cold start
Ok. So I have messed around with the startup spark advance. Not much difference. So I feel that the Open Loop % change vs coolant is the way to go. Anyone have any more insight in this?
Also, Problem 2. Since this is my thread I thought I would post my other problem.
When I start my car and if the air conditioning is on it will most likely die. But it starts and runs if the ac is off. Also my rpms really go low when turning it on. (Idle rpm is 800) All AC settings are what the ARAP.bin has for factory. I have tried adjusting the startup steps for AC as well as the RPM advance. Neither has gained results. It's like the load is not avail. spark tables are stock for ARAP.bin.
Funny thing is : just like with BLM's. When I started my car this morning and did the testing. It ran great except for the cold start. Even when it got to temp (210). I was able to turn on the AC and it dropped to around 650 and then back up. Just fine. So I burned that chip.
Later in the day messed with some other settings and using the Autoprom I emulated some other changes trying for the cold start. Nothing worked. So I stopped put back in my chip that I burned this morning that worked fine. Now the car is having a complete hard time starting. What gives? Took the chip out. Let it set for a bit. Put it back in and tried again and it started fine. The temp was at 190. Tried the AC. And it bogged down big time and died. Did this several times. Let it set some more. Restarted. Got it back up to temp and tried again. Worked fine. What gives?
Could my computer be bad? Everything else I have tested seems to be working great.

I noticed the Open loop % change vs Coolant 3 temp locations with lower values..i upped the fuel in the 90,11,133 to 13.67 for all. The idle dip has basically disappeared. Im still working on trying to smooth out the idle for open and closed loop...it is still a bit "choppy" overall...but no more dips/sputtering.

Re: Open Loop Tuning from cold start
i had a similar issue when i switched to the $6e arap in my 86 Vette. At cold start it would fire good and run for a sec then the idle would dip down to the point where it would sputter a bit then come back to a decent..not great idle until warmed up.

I have the same kindof sputter (choppy) between open and closed loop during idle in Park only. In Drive it is barely noticable. I will keep you posted if I come up with a solution. Or if you do, please let me know.
Thanks

Re: Open Loop Tuning from cold start
On a side note. I solved my other problem. it was the IAC. Luckily I have 2 older ones as well to swap to. Put one of them in. Works great again.
Re: Open Loop Tuning from cold start
Just read your thread and was going to say "Something is wrong with IAC"
My experiance with cold start tuning is..... you get one shot a day in morning for changes. After that your wasting your time and screwing up any results from the one change at first start up.
Wideband O2 is a great tool for data to adjust the cold start tables.
Have your VE done before starting cold start issues. Choke is all adjustments off main fueling table
13.6 to 1 AFR is not rich during choke...

Re: Open Loop Tuning from cold start
My car cold starts in the high 12's to one. Its where it needs to be to fire on a cold day. Took a ton of fuel. For me i play with iac alittle... Number of steps vs coolant i believe. Not a maf car tho but i thought there may be some iac stuff in arap.
Cold idle needs more rpm too. I raised it up to idle stabile and then taper down as it warms up. Doesnt seem to like less fuel at this point. But you do get one good shot per day and thats it... Really time consuming to really dial in cold starts

Re: Open Loop Tuning from cold start
Thanks for the info on the cold starts. Kinda figured only once a day for tuning is gonna work on it.
But I have just noticed that when I my temp is at 100 degrees it will startup fine. But when I drive at that 100 degree temp I get a little lean pop on a takeoff (and it only happens once on take off. The next block at a stop and takeoff it will not). But that is the only time it does it. My AFR is still at 13.7 or so. So I think I will try to richen that range up a little more. But my 130 degree on up cold start range is great. And Closed loop is just awesome right now. So I think once I get this dialed in I am doing good.
This site has been a band of great information to help with this tuning process. I really appreciate all the people who haved helped me and others (Search Feature: Is my best friend lol).
