Re: gains from a dyno tune?

This would be interesting to know. I have a 91, 305 TPI with a 5 speed and I would like to know what the gajns might be with a dyno tune.

Re: gains from a dyno tune?

Depends on combo. My 11 second 400 whp 383 saw about 10 hp peak but what it really picked up in was mid range around converter stall.

Car was street tuned and it flys thru gears so fast its hard to pick up air fuel data in the 3600-4500 rpm range. On dyno with wideband logging it was very lean. So i richened it up, played with timing and 10 pulls later i was up 30 lb ft torque in that area and about 15 hp. Top end was closely tuned on street and track so not much gain at peak rpm.

That little gain gave me 2 tenths and 2 mph at the track tho. Ran a stronger 1/8 mile

Stock to bolt on L98 may only see 5-10 hp gain. Really depends sone stock tunes are pretty rich and it would respond abit to leaning out. My L98 seemed to pick up about 10 hp from advancing timing alittle and 93 oct gas. Looked to be 1 mph at track.

A big turbo car may pick up hundreds of hp. Thats right hundreds... My friend controls hp by timing on his turbo truck. Same boost level, pulling timing made almost 200 hp difference. max timing was 800+ whp while few degs less made 600's. Exhaust temps were hotter but it was an experiment to see how the motor responds. Use the dyno to see how motor responds to timing and fuel adjustments you may find some big differences

Cool, my 305 TPI had the G92 / N10 package, so it has the 350 cam... I have ceramic coated Hooker 2055's, 3" Exhaust, Ported Plenum, coolant Bypass, K&N Filter and an EBL P4 Flash There is a local shop with Dyno, I'll call them up... Thanks!

Re: gains from a dyno tune?

yeah i went with the crane 2032 cam along with intake mods. considering my car is speed density Id assume it doesent adapt as well as a MAF.... That why im hoping a dyno tune will pick up power and maybe eliminate some of the quirks it has when its cold...

Re: gains from a dyno tune?

Well dyno is mainly for warm operation and wot tuning. Cold starting and cold running is sonething that takes alittle more time to do. Can be done on dyno but need to allow time for it. Need car there for a day to cold start and do some driving tuning and then when its warm you can do wot.

Driveability tuning is best done on the street in loaded conditions like high gear and up hills and things like that. Or mustang type dyno that can bear load on drivetrain

Re: gains from a dyno tune?

Agree w Orr89. I've picked up 8-12rwhp but the real diff is the area under the curve both for torque and hp.
Also, I do driveability first then WOT tuning. They aren't discrete.
