Software Compatibility

Rbob,

I am looking into getting a new tuning laptop, because my dinosaur is fading fast. Is the WUD compatible with windows 8? Also, do you know if TunerPro is also compatible?

People have used TP RT with Win 8, I can't answer your EBL question though.

Thanks for the reply. I am sure hoping that the EBL is, otherwise I guess I could always partition the hard drive and run windows XP or 7 on it.

I'm guessing Windows 8 reviews have turned away new computer customers and sales. HP now offers Windows 7 again in new computer purchases.

Ya, I'm not crazy about it either. Once I got used to Windows 7, 8 was just coming out and so far I do not like it. At least 7 was based off of XP which made it much easier to adapt to.

Re: Software Compatibility

Win 7 was based on Vista, hence why you use Vista compatible drivers with Win 7 when Win 7 specific drivers are not available. It was given a quasi XP feel to appeal to people that didn't like Vista.

Also there is an update to Win 8, Win 8.1 that brings the task bar back and made some changes to the home screen GUI settings. I have not used Win 8, yet, but have been shown some of the changes by friends that seem to like Win 8.1.

Well, I guess its worth a shot if the EBL and WUD software are compatible with it.

Re: Software Compatibility

I have been slowly reading the EBL Tuning thread and I have come across a posting of a person saying that he is using Windows 8 and the EBL software. So, if this posting is correct, it seems as though it is compatible. Thanks everyone for you help.

Re: Software Compatibility

Ok, I purchased my new tuning laptop which is running Windows 8. I had no issues with the WUD or TunerPro. Also, set up for the USB to Serial was very easy and hassle free, unlike my HP running Windows 7.

New question.... Is there a way to enlarge the WUD screen? I am using a 11" screen, so the WUD is pretty small now.

I have a new laptop with Windows 8 on it . I am using the EBL P4 daughter board and use Tunerpro RT as my software. I have had zero issues.

Yes it is, 32 or 64 bit. I even had it running under WINE on Linux at one point.

Re: Software Compatibility

The USB 3.0 ports seem to be more of an issue then WIndows 8. Especially on the Surface which only has 3.0 ports and no USB 2.0 port.

Re: Software Compatibility

Its funny you mention this. I was using a USB 3.0 and I noticed that the WUD would intermittently work, but I was able to flash the ECM. I lowered the latency for the receiving and that seemed to fix the issue with the WUD, but then for some reason I couldn't flash the ECM. So I tried lowering that as well. That didn't work. So I changed to the USB 2.0 and that didn't work either, even after lowering the latency. And then I was plagued with the random mouse movements like is common of the HP's with Win7 and it thinking it is a serial pointing mouse. Well, now I cannot get any port to work, and it is showing an error for the USB to Serial device. I forgot which error, but I am going to try and uninstall it and then re-install it.

Re: Software Compatibility

HP laptops with WIN7 don't have the FTDI USB drivers installed correctly. As you mentioned best to back out the driver then install fresh. Can get the latest driver here:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

It is a two level install. IOW, the New Hardware Found dialog box will open twice.

Re: Software Compatibility

Rbob,

I am using a Dynex Prolific USB-Serial. Im not sure if it uses FIDI, but there is a good chance I am wrong. I reinstalled the driver from Dynex's web site and now I have the WUD working again, but I am still not able to flash the ECM. I can change banks though. I get a RX Timeout 2 (and 1, but separately)-Tx1Info Failed error message. Should I purchase a FIDI USB-Serial? I have been using this device for a couple years now and I had no issues on my old, WinXP machine. I had similar issues with my Win7 laptop, but that wasn't a big deal because my other one was working fine.

Re: Software Compatibility

I made the switch to MAC back when my corporate (like most) wouldn't support anything newer then NT and finally XP around 2004-05. My XP systems was a beast and ran everything even dual boot linux/mac. Windows 7 is much better and polished now but has no business support therefore dwindling retail sales as well. Win 8 is even worse. Win 9 or whatever they call was announced last month.

The MAc switch was exciting fun and took a few weeks but as power user and avid gamer and dork I do not feel I have missed anythign as far as access to software switching from windows. years ago maybe since many programs were not web based but now everything is run through cloud it doesnt matter.

the upside. the hardware is soooo much better reiliable and holds it value and just works.

and if you must have windows I use VMware fusion and run win 7 virtually on my macbook pro. It runs perfect for tuner pro. I datalog and burn in a virtual win 7 on my mac then use mac for everything else.

I am ammazed though in full screen win 7 bootcamp mode (not virtual but hard boot to win 7) my macbook 2012 i7 3.2ghz 8gb ram setup only gets maybe 2-3 hours of battery life.

switch back to mac and it last for 8-10hours. windows is bloatware, look into swicthign if you can.

My son has a 2010 airbook 11" and I have used it as well and that I love mnore then my macbok pro. it boots up faster and opens web and programs faster. the newer ones blow away my macbook for daily use in speed because of the ssd and they are affordable

space is one small issue but again I use cloud and network drives at home for my stuff anyway so rarley have lot of stuff on my macbook other then applications and working documents

I wish I could afford a Mac, but it isn't quite in the budget right now.

The Prolific USB/Serial adapters cables rarely work with the EBL system. They just can't keep up with the data rate and turn around times. And it gets worse as the PC/Laptop get faster, really strange to say the least.

Re: Software Compatibility

I hear you. My son got his MacBook Air from amazon preowned and it is brand new and was $450. I sold my last 2 max for $500 and upgraded for another 500 or more for new ones every few years food investment

I see MacBook Pro 2010 on amazon for $500 all over great and fast or go for an air for same price
