ZZ4 cam and emissions
ZZ4 cam and emissions
Well I have my emissions test this coming spring. I live in IL, what are my chances of passing the test with a 89 Vette code. I have AL vette heads, ZZ4 cam, running SLP exhaust and a cat. I had to add a little fuel and pull some timing out of the bin to keep the knock sensor happy last summer. The car runs strong, but I still need to beat the sniffer/dyno. I have heard of people registering their cars in WI to beat the system, but I am not sure what it takes to do that. Can I just fill and form out and send money? Any other suggestons on the bin to make it emissions freindly? Take more timing out?
I am going through in CT with ZZ4 cam, 1.6/1.5 GMPP roller rockers and Fastburn heads with GM TBI system and MAJOR Prom work.. Actually, just BARELY failed with my aggressive spark PROM, put in the OEM truck PROM, filled it with Supre this AM and will go through tonight...
Moral,
Stock = mellow advance = GOOD
Good cats = good
Proper tune-up and you should be good.

If Tim can get his 355 Miniram with AFR 190s and a cam of 230/244* duration @ .050 in Illinois to pass, you should have no problems.

My $hitbox carbed 327 with 70' heads and a 216/228/112 passed the dreaded California Check only test. I looked at the specs and it burned so clean, it would still have passed emmissions for the 87 year by a long shot! This is with a new cat, all smog hooked up and functioning properly and 13* initial timing, dynomax smoggy headers.
RPM---%CO2--%O2--HC(PPM)max--HCmeas--CO%max--COmeas
1579--14.3-----1.2----138-------------37---------.98----------.01
1745--14.8-----.5------110-------------30---------.78----------.01
NO(ppm)max--NOmeas
1227------------279
1087------------284
max=max allowed emissions for 82' vehicles
meas=amount measured
Here in CA they check on a dyno so as to put a load on the engine. Probably do where you are at as well. Here we occasionally get the dreaded "Check only Station" request. You then have to take it to a certified specialist who nitpicks everything, even the heat riser tube from the exhaust to the air cleaner. These places have no tools at all, they do nothing but smog checks, no tune ups, no timing adjustments, nothing but smog check. These guys are not the gas station guys who are easy to get to overlook stuff. They are kind of A-holes.
If I made it, you will have no problem provided all your stuff is hooked up, functioning properly, and your engine is tuned up and running properly.

I actually have a house and dual life in CA. You don't know what trouble is until you bring a 350 V8 Jeep from CT to CA to register... Man, I had to buy a salvaged TBI truck and then just swapped the entire motor assembly and stuff into the Wrangler to shut the guy up. Even after that, they made me make my exhaust SINGLE from dual becasue there were no trucks with true dual exhaust. PITA. Not I have them figured out, though, and my Jeep has the Engine Change sticker permanently affixed to it, which is nice. Most don't realize that when they look at your vehicle, they check EVERY WIRE AND SENSOR for its presence and actual actuation. PITA. That's why I brought it back to CT. Forkers...

z28Dan,
My 84 Xfire has TFS aluminum heads, a CompCams Marine grind similar to a ZZ4 212/218,488/495. I finally passed when I disabled the EGR in the bin file and richened up ther mixture a bit.
I have full emissions gear on my. Only other problem was replacing gas cap. I made the changes after I failed first time, then paid 20 bucks to try out new bin without using up one of my 3 tries. Went through and passed, turned around and went back in only this time on the State's nickel.

Also, the L98 heads dont have EGR passages, so you need to fabricate an EGR setup like Scoggin ****ey is doing for their Vortec heads/intake. Or just hope you can pass without it.
