The 'IDC Sockets' on the bottom are actually three pieces lined up, a 30 and 2 20's. I couldn't find a 66-pin piece (looked & looked), and if you make it an even 70 (even though the ECM only has 66) it fits in the header slot nice. The ones available from JDR and the like won't line up (they bind at the ends), so I had to shave them each down on a disc sander so they fit end-to-end that way. Gotta be gentle. I've got some extra if you could use em, just get /w/ me offline.

If you read through the 68HC11 disassembly of the likes of BUA_HAC (it's around, DIY-EFI.org), you'll see several references to the "Mode 4". Apparently it is something that can be requested/invoked via RS232, much like an ALDL communications Mode 1, which will return values in the datastream, and Mode 2 & 3, which will return values from specific memory locations. I think the Mode-4 is like the 'poke' while the other modes are like the 'peek'. But again, I never got it to work. You're more than welcome to take a close look at the source code of my ALDL comm program, which makes use of some of the 'peek' routines. Haven't gotten around to really going after the Mode-4 stuff, but I've been interested in it for a couple years now.
Also, don't worry about the UV stuff, just go to a FlashProm. You're right you won't be able to reprogram the Flash via the ECM protocols (or could you, with a few minor mods???). But I don't think that matters anyways for Mode-4, since in Mode-4, the ECM will refer to the content of the memory you've stuffed in there via Mode-4 rather than the content of the EPROM itself. By all means this is conjecture, but I think it is at least partially right.

Try these out:

The BUA disassembly is the Aussie version of the 165, with many commonalities. The source code links should be self-explanatory. Everything to get started if you want to play around with it. Hope this helps.
Maybe we should start a new thread and let this one die? Sounds like some uniquie ideas which bear their own topic are rolling around here.

Craig, I just look through my junk computer parts are found a couple of old IDE ribbon cables. I guess I can just use these to adapt to my board. I think I should be all set. Thanks for the offer on the ones you have. One other thing, I don't know who fabs your boards, but have you checked out PC Express' miniboard service. It is a pretty good deal.
Thanks,
J

Yep, they did the prototypes for me. I've gotten some stuff from them before too. I know several folks use em, pretty good work.
How are you gonna do the IDE cable connectors? I looked into that. Didn't look like it would work. Maybe though... That's how I had a ZIF attached to my ECM before, on the end of a ribbon cable, but it suffered signal loss and intermittent success. It was OK though...

yeah ur rite craig .. we are getin some ideas here .. maybe it should be a new thread for the mode 4 and ECM Emualtor control
i think that dissassembly code is sweet ... its even self explantory
i have to see how it works out... downloaded ur Qbasic software im lookin into it ... man long time since i did Qbasic (had lot of power for controllign ports though)

itll be sweet if someone could convert craigs code to run on a PIC controller or a BASIC Stamp.. and send the output to a LCD or a LED MAtrix.. man it would be one hellova monitoring system.. compact and really good..
hey craig have u ever programmed a PIC / a BAsic stamp??
