prom/305tpi system on a 355 help

I had a 305 tpi in my trans am. well i bought a 355 with 8.5:1 compression and a roots style blower on top. Well i am having second thoughts about going carb. what would i need to mod to make the 305 system work well with the 355 in its n/a state. i am going to sell/trade the blower and buy a vortech one eventually. But i want to know what i need to mod to make this motor perform to its potential on the stock system. Will the restrictions of the tpi go to the wayside when i hook up a vortech to it. and should i convert to a sd system??

second if i do go tpi what do i need to burn proms just a programmer and tunercat?

Third what kind of prom should i use with this motor?? arap.bin??

please help i am still trying to decide carb or tpi

There has been a number of posts recently on "superchargers, blowers and various power-adders" with the stock ECMs. As it stands right now, the only "easy" option is to convert to the 117749 ECM $58 TDF for the 4.3 Turbo Syclone/Typhoons.

There is no "easy" plug-n-play options with the MAF 165 or SD 730 ECMs for boost. You can "kludge" them and SD is a little "easier to kludge" than MAF - but they are far from perfect solutions and have limitations. Without actually rewritting the Source Code of the SD 7730 to handle a 2 Bar Map, converting to the 7749 remains the best solution.

The 7749 is an SD setup - so you can sell your MAF to pay for the 2 Bar MAP sensor (and probably have some change left for a burger).

I don't have the $58 TDF that is need for the SyTy Bin, but it is my understanding that they use the same method as the 730 (which the 749 is a variation of, though not directly plug-n-play). Thus through a combination of Cyl Vol Size, # of Cyls and VE Tables, you control the fuel.

Scope out www.syty.com (or www.syty.org I can't which is which) and chat with some of the guys there. I'm sure they can explain EXACTLY what's in the 7749, the wiring necessary and the easiest way to go about the conversion.

There is a plug and play option for the 165 , convert to the aussie $5D code as we have supercharged version with a 2 bar map , or buy a kit from kalmaker.com that you can use up to 3 bar.
Thats what i use anyway as its too hard to try and find any other ECU here downunder.
Now before you jump down my throat I dont sell or benefit in any way from kalmaker but I would have to say after using it for a fair while (as well as normal prom programming) that it is the best being able to program on the fly- just remember to get someone else to drive if you want to make changes as you drive down the road , too dangerous to moitor the laptop and the road at the same time)

If anyone wants a copy of a bin to suit 2 bar $5D give me a email and I will send a copy , its a 15 min operation to wire the MAP sensor in place of the MAF and if it doesnt suit you can convert back at any time.

Dan, I don't think anyone is accusing you of that. I generally recommend TunerCat as a BIN Editor because I find it easy to use and TC is always updating their TDFs - so I recommend it, not because I get any financial gain from TunerCat.

It's nice to know other alternatives. I am not sure on the difficulty on getting the proper $5D Memcal (which I would recommend if you convert to a "MAP" version of the 165 - which I assume the $5D is. I have a heck of time sometimes with the dealers here explaining that I want an AUJP1615 for a 1991 L98 GTA and getting them to find the proper part number. But I don't live in a "major center" in Canada either.

Do you know where a person can get a "hack" of the $5D like we have for the $8D etc?

I use the Holden or chev memcal when I did it , seems to run ok enough in limp mode with either as long as it is V8.

Yes $5D is map , can be obtained from tunercat - which has to be one of the best BIN editors around , I use it daily too.

There is a fair bit of stuff for the $5D stuff in the GMECM archives that Grumpy and the boys did a long time ago , do a search on programming 808
to convert to the 808 $5D code you need a 5V signal to the map , move MAF wire to MAP position and its done. Look on gmecm incoming for V6 and V8 wiring diagrams or drop me a email and I will post them.

Daniel,

Is there also a plug & play option for the 730 ECM? We'll be starting to tune on a 455 Olds with a Roots Style Blower. The guy that built this rod has a 730 ECM on it with just a 1 bar MAP sensor and I'm thinking were in trouble before we even begin.

Our other option is to keep the MAP sensor above the blower and go with an FMU. It just keeps getting uglier and uglier.

Also, Does the SY/TY ECM have drivers for 8 injectors?

Thanks
Steve

I talked to the guy who sells kalamker last night and hopefully I will be getting the 165 and 730 software to beta test soon - so its a while off yet before being released.

At present only the 165 software for MAP is available and has been for at least 2 years on the latest version :lala: The version I am using at present has autotune for closed loop correction (if you want to enable it ) that alters the VE table rather than the BLM table and when you have achieved a stage where it is correct then you can turn the self learn off and go back to the std BLM tables.
This only applies to closed loop operation where 14.7 is commanded and not to anywhere else.

There has been extra stuff added like VE table for closed throttle, boost control, water injection , tuneable knock sensor ,tps mode ,1,2,and 3 bar calibrations , boost cut limits. A lot more code has been added than I have been able to do in by adding new source code into my disassembly and he has managed to be able to make all these changes while the engine is running - great for being able to get the tune close quickly for odball stuff like big cubes, big cam, different injectors.

I think we have the corner on oddball stuff on this one. I could not find kalmaker's web site. VE autotune sounds neat.
