is the value of coolant temp used in any fuel maps/ Ign maps...

i have made away with my coolant temp sender and i have a mechanical gauge for coolant temp...

i have an 89 camaro RS with a v6 '7302A computer

what i was wondering was wether the coolant temp value played a part in the equations... since w/o any sender connected the coolant value that i read using ALDL is absurd....does it affect??

Go to www.tunercat.com, and look at what the various editors allow you to do, and see how many are coolant temp related.

hey grumpy.. thanx a lot... but i already program bins for my buddies 92 camaro which has the 7730 and i knwo for sure that his uses coolant temp..

mine 302A is not listed there and winbin i dont have an ECU file

but the 89 TPI V8 used a 165 and thats the same MAF system that i have and it relies on coolant temp too for its ign maps...

do i conclude that i need to have cooalnt temp??

Yes, if you want the car to run anywhere near right.

I agree with Bruce. The CTS is one of the more important sensors in my opinion. Though there may be limited info on your ECM, I suspect it is used about the same as all the other GM ECMs. GM is pretty consistent in that way (it hates to spend money and re-invent the wheel).

When you get into "source code" you start to see a "similarity" to much of the logic with GM's routines.

one more thing guys ...

there is only one coolant temp sensor in the car right??

the same sensor thats connected to the gauge feeds the computer???

its been running w/o the elec sensor for a while... but im begining to think that it'll run even better that way...

You should have 2 sensors, for example my TPI has one for the gauge ( head mounted ), one for the computer ( intake mounted ).

I'm guessing that the one you removed for your gauge only had one wire (typical). The one for the ECM (located on the front of the intake manifold below the TB) has two wires. Yours being an '89, you probably won't be confusing it with the cold start switch like I did.

yeah i removed the one wire sensor... thats on the drivers side behind the A/C close to the exhaust manifolds... and connected a mechanical gauge there...

so does that mean its fine ??

is the one for the computer beloww the manifold .... same in v6 too??

I missed that v6 part but it still sounds like you removed the one for the gauge, not the one for the 'puter.

will the temp that the computer reads be different from teh one in the gauge??

cos im reading the temp using ALDL ...and doesnt seem to be the same as the one in the gauge...

im gonna run around this weekend with ALDL connected laptop and see the temp differences and see if its different...

there should be some difference between the two as the head mounted sensor (gauge) is closer to the combustion chamber and exhaust manifold verses the intake (comp) but it shouldn't be more than 10-20 degrees cooler than the gauge. Also...does your ALDL show temp in F* or C*? Its easy to get mixed up. cheers, Bob
