$A5 def. file?

hey guys,I've been trying to burn a chip for at least 2 months
but no results.(o.k. I gave it a rest for 2 weeks.)today's try was
using the 29c256 chip,165 ecm,32b def. file(tried 6e weeks ago)
car is an 87 auto iroc,and the p.p set for the 29c256.Put it in the p.p.(it has never verified) go through the rest of the steps to program(steps are correct),burn and put back in car,car starts
runs like crap, c.e. light stays on.put original chip back in and car back to normal.take the 29c256 back to the p.p. read it as
27c256(I think) and it (tunercat says I need $a5 def. file to open(which does'nt exist) and I know this so where am I going wrong?????any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance. :hail:

First, if you are using a 165, you need to read the BIN from a 29C256 as a 27C128 (which is what you are emulating).

Also, what is your ORIGINAL source BIN and how are you writing the 16K MAF bin onto the 32K 29C256 Flash Prom?

Please be specific and don't "take short cuts" in your explanation. It may be as simple as setting the "proper" starting device address (should be 4000 for 165s) or you may have a corrupted BIN in the first place.

First, go get yourself a 32K BIN file for an SD car like the AUJP1615 to test that the "write/verify" operation is working.

If so, then I suspect your BIN that you copied for TPIS is wrong/corrupted and the source of the problem

The trick to "eprom burning" and computers is to do "one step at a time"...you are trying to do a multiple of steps - any of which you have done incorrectly and haven't documented.

So PROVE you can write to an AT29C256 by using a "known good" 32K Bin file. Using 16K bin files for MAF cars require "some tricks"...do the easy crap first.

Remember, an AT29C256 is a 32K chip NOT a 16K chip...we need to trick it to do that. But verify you can work in 32K mode first.

If so, then I suggest doing a search on "AT29C256". The topic of how to write a 16K BIN on a 32K eprom has been discussed hundreds of times and there are a couple of different ways to do it. Also, remember that when you READ a 16K file from a 32K eprom, you MUST use 27C128 NOT 27C256 or AT29C256 EVEN if that is the chip the 16K file is written on.
