VSS Signal type & ALDL signal type

Does somebody have information about exactly what type of signal goes from the VSS to the ECM (say the 165 and 730 ECMs) as well as the signal type that is present at the ALDL? Long story short, I want to build a digital speedometer and I have no idea what type of signal I'm even dealing with here. Thanks.

I know it is an AC voltage signal that increases as the speed goes higher.I don't know about the signal at the ALDL though.

What increases, the voltage or the frequency of the a/c signal?

If I am not mistaken,it is the voltage that fluctuates.

Nope, it's actually the frequency. The voltage may fluctuate, but the frequency is what carries the "data".

165 ECM = 2000 pulse per mile DC Voltage

730 ECM = 4000 pulse per mile AC Voltage

It is the frequency that varies.
