Tach question

My tach's nuts.

First of all, I swapped out the engine fot an old LG4 outta my '83 Pontiac wagon. None of the guages worked 'cept the speedo. That was fine, no sending units on the heads for temp, etc, etc. Good enough.

So the thing is, the tach deosn't work. I swapped out the old cap and rotor off the Z, just in case. No-joy. Funny thing is, the tach will read above about 4700, but then engine's DEFINATELY not turning that high. Any ideas...??

The tach wire is white & goes from the coil to the tach filter (if your car has one) mounted to the fire wall, behind the distributor. The tach filter has a wire that goes into the harness to the firewall connector on the driver side.
