Why are my lights surging?

All of my lights seem to surge slightly, but only while the engine is running. Is this the voltage regulator? If so, what can I do about it?

Yes, I would guess that it might be the voltage regulator. If your car has a voltmeter, does it also fluctuate up and down?

You should have a place like Sears or Autozone load-test your battery. If the battery is in such bad shape that it won't accept a charge, that might cause the regulator to act funny.

The regulator is built into the alternator, so you'd have to buy the correct parts and take the alternator apart. If you did that, though, you'd want to just get a whole rebuild kit while you're in there. Autozone will test the alternator for free if you take it out of the car.
