Disabling the ECM
Disabling the ECM
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it "illegal" in every state to disable or remove the ecm on any street driven vehicle? I would love to stick a holley 600 on top of my performer egr manifold and replace the distributor vacuum advance HEI unit but I am soundly under the impression this is a no go w/the feds. It wouldn't be that difficult to go back to the ECM and carb/distributor combo come inspection time but would be an inconvienance to do this every year.
Well, judging from the phenomenal response to my question, I would assume that I am correct. What I was hoping for was that some states possibly had no legislation against doing this but if it's a Federal law, I guess that would be a moot point.

Of course it is illegal, but what they don't know, won't hurt you. If you have annual inspections, than that makes it tough. But when you live in places like where I am from, you see all kinds of crazy stuff under the hood.
