Air Bag

I want to ditch the airbag in my '91. Is there going to be an idiot light constantly telling me what I already know? If so, how do I stop it?

The light is powered up by the gages fuse and then pulled to earth by the DERM module under the dash (passenger side-silver box, yellow connector). To stop it lighting up, don't disconnect the gages fuse! Just remove the DERM connector. Remove dash pad and right hand L-shape air ducting. You will then see a big silver box secured by one screw (which will have been removed as it is one of the dash pad attaching screws!). However it won't come out as there is a plastic bracket with a hole in it just above the box! This is not used on the 91 model, so get a small hacksaw and cut it off. Pull the box out and scrap it! On other thoughts, keep it for a bit as I may need it!!
Then find the 2 black/white wires that go into the yellow connector and cut them both. Then tape them up and stick everything out of the way and put the dash pad back.

If you want to deploy the airbag safely, let me know and I will tell you how to do it! If not, be very careful how you dispose of it. (And remove it). It is illegal to dispose of undeployed air bags!

When removing the airbag itself, disconnect the SIR fuse and then the yellow connector under the steering column. This will isolate the airbag.

Andy.
