Electric rear hatch not working

The electric hatch hasnt worked since i bought the car (may 02), the button releases the hatch but it doesnt rise or take itself down when closing, are there any problems with these or could the motor have just given up?

There's a switch that tells the hatch motor when to stop. Sometimes that switch goes bad. It's an easy fix. I just did this fix on my sister's IROC a few months ago.

if that doesn't work try making sure all the grounds on the motor and switch are tight. mine did the same thing for a while and then i found out my grounds weren't tight. i tighened them and it works great.

You'll have to take apart the whole assembly to get to the switch. It's black and it's attatched to the top side of the actual motor. That's about all the better description I can give you. I wish I had a picture or something for you.

I went through the same dillema

Hey, check this thread, I had the same dillema, I ended up creating my own though, bypassing the relays etc, and powering directly to the release switch. Hope this is of some use. Good luck.

I just ran a wire to the swicth from the battery and played with the switch to see if it was working. Probably not the best way, but it works for me.

it might not have been the best way but it worked & thats what matters! i'll try it tommorrow.

Can the switch be replaced if thats the problem or would i need to change the whole unit?

Uk Iroc-Z,

I thought my rear hatch motor had broken, (same issues as yours), and I found a reset button that cured my problem. It's worth a try for no cost. Stick your finger down through the brushes that cover the lock. On the left hand side of the switch you'll find a small switch. Push it down and see if the motor rises up. If it does that should sort it out.

Regards,

The switch can be replaced if that's the problem. There's only one or two screws that hold it on. If I remember right, it was only like $5 or $10.

Same thing I did, but I ran a fuseable link on the hot wire. The only problem I see with that is the relays are bypassed and you will be able to pop the hatch while driving. ( that sux.. but I am going to put a red hat type switch over it) ..

I only did that temporarily to see what was wrong with the hatch motor and assembly. I would never permanently wire it up that way.

How do i identify the switch?

Is there a reset button?? (as suggested by uk89camaro) I had a look today but couldnt find it.

Is the switch all part of the mechanism that bolted to where the motor is? or is is somewhere else?

The switch is black and is part of the mechanism that bolted to where the motor is.

I've never seen any kind of reset button myself, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Uk IROC-Z,

My motor was stuck in the down position, and I just chanced on the switch whilst rooting around. Don't know if the switch is actually a "reset" orif it' there for onther reasons. If your motor is not stuck down, it may be another problem.
See you Sunday!

eric,
Good to hear from another UK based yank driver. Your sig. describes a machine far removed from my stock 305....any pictures?
Are you at Billing this weekend? I've a mind to create a window sticker for the thirdgen.org, just to see how many of the guys use this board. Incidentally, I have found this board to be a great resource of knowledge for those (like me) that are not naturally gifted in the car world.
Cheers.....

A third gen sticker is a great idea uk89camaro,put me down for one. This board is great for "straight from the horses mouth"info, and I've learnt a lot of great ideas from it.By the way I didn't have a clue about any cars let alone yank ones up until when I bought it 3? years ago.Luckily a good mate of mine has a vast amount of experience of building yank cars.I suppose I just had a go at building the cage etc(he done the welding) and its not really that hard.I'm just one of those people who can't leave things alone, and the first thing I did when I had the car was I ripped off all that A/C crap and smog control junk(a lot of extra weight).I've ****ed a few things up mind, and I expect I'll do it again, but as long as I learn from it eh.As for Billing I take it it's an american car show.I've got this (probably wrong) idea that these shows are full of people dressing up as cowboys and indians, line dancing, and that is not really my scene.Any of you UK blokes into drag racing(Santa pod/Avon park etc).Believe me you haven't seen anything until you get blown away by top fuel, alchohol, pro mod etc.I think I would live at the track if it was on every week. The car looks great uk89camaro and I'll put some pics of mine on when its finished (and I get a digital camera).Cheers for now guys.
ps.eric's not my real name but it does fine for the net.

Just got back!!

What a great weekend!!??

I counted approx 20 Irocs/RS etc..

Like the sticker idea UK89, didnt manage to catch up with you at Billings but there were so many people there and sooooo many cars.

Thanks for the pic on the hatch mech, im off work 2moro so ill have a look. I'll also try to locate the switch (thanks KS91)

I agree with you eric about this board being an absolute gem!

Ive had so many hints, tipps & help from different people & i dont know what i'd have done without it.

As UK89 said its good to here from others like us on this side of the pond with american cars, maybe a forum for Uk owners chat would be an idea????? i dont mean for just us but for people over here to get to no each other, where to get spares, trustworthy mechanics & body specialists etc etc....Good idea????????????????

Where are you both from? I live near Southend in Essex.

Hi UK Iroc-z,I'll give you a list of people I've found helpful in my quest for Camaro perfection.
LA racing-can be very cheap for spares especially race parts.(have to wait for some parts though)
Real steel-Very good general and race parts.
Hauser racing-same as above and well known in UK race car scene for building some top machinery.
Rodley motors-Very cheap general spares.
There must be plenty of others but I generally stick to these.I will say though that prices can vary enormously so don't be afraid to ring around. As for mechanics etc. I try to do as much as possible myself with anything I can't do being left to a good mate. One of the reasons for this is that I've heard so many horror stories from friends about shody workmanship by chancers. For example a £4500 paint job repeatedly bubbling up,a set of very expensive heads (£1200) being built with crap (when he paid for top notch) internals,a set of expensive aftermarket discs had the wrong size studs pressed in and they cracked. The list is longer.I don't want to worry you but just be wary.Paranoia is a terrible thing! As for secondhand spares there are a few breakers worth looking at.I have a few myself as this is the second Camaro I've had.Just send me an e-mail you never know I might have it.I will also recommend reading the american mags(UK ones are ok but feature a lot of crap other than yanks) like Carcraft, hotrod, super chevy and chevy high performance.Carcraft is especially relevant to anyone modifying a yank car themselves. All of these can be ordered through a good newsagent. My real name by the way is Neil and I live in Gloucester.Hope all this helps and I've got loads of great ideas for modifying Camaros if your interested.

I'm afraid that both of my rear hatch mechanisms are the non-motorised pull down type. The console switch still releases the catch though.I remember reading something in carcraft once about the motorized ones being trouble and I'm sure it suggested junking it.I presume the only reason(might be wrong) that they were fitted was to stop the hatch leaking(both mine used to).But a correctly adjusted hatch and a new seal should sort this.
