BIG problems hooking up gauges
BIG problems hooking up gauges
Hi Guys. I got some auto meter gauges for christmas this year for the a-pilar pod. I received the gauge for oil pressure and for water temp. (they are electrical gauges.) I was wondering if I have to use the sending units that came with them or if I can just splice into the ones that are there. I want the ones in the dash to work too. If I need to use the sending units that they gave me, how on earth do I hook them up? Do I have to drill into the manifolds and heads and so forth? If anyone has these gauges and everything works, can you please help me and tell me how you hooked them up? Thanks very much for your help. It will be greatly appreciated.
Eric

I was shocked to see that companies sold a taillight
set for a rustang! Since when do they have taillights????

The oil pressure sender may be connected to the 1/8" NPT hole in the block, behind the intake manifold - it's plugged from the factory, or the sender may be teed in with the factory oil pressure sender / fuel pump oil pressure switch, which is near the oil filter - it's either a 1/4" or 3/8" NPT fitting.
The temperature sender may be threaded into the 3/8" NPT fitting in the passenger side cylinder head, between cyls 6 & 8, or it may be teed in with the ECM coolant temperature sender on the intake manifold - there may be a plugged coolant port on the intake manifold that may be used, as well.

Mr. Burgess,
The factory connections that I can use, are they single wire or 2? If they are 2 which one do I tee into? Thanks for the info. I was hoping that I could tee into those.

Anyone?
btw I just got done wiring up my tach. Listen to this. I wired it all up and ran it to the tach output on the MSD 6a. When I started the car the needle went BACKWARDS and stayed at 8 grand (it is an 8 grand tach) I called the auto meter tech line and they told me it was faulty. I called summit tech line (where I bought it) and they said that I need a tach adapter for hte auto meter "auto guage"model for it to work properly. Why didn't they tell me that when I asked before I bought it? Idiots. Now I have the car all torn apart and will have to wait as now I cannot afford the harness. I wish that I knew what and where it was hooked up to. I could just run it myself.

By "teeing" I meant with pipe - tee the Autometer sender in with the factory sender so that both senders are connected to oil pressure & water temperature, respectively. You cannot use a factory sender to drive an Autometer gauge, to my knowledge. Sorry for the confusion.

Mr. Burgess,
I figured it out finaly. I am also sorry that I mis understood you. But it works now and that is all that matters. By the way anyone here running a sport comp tach with an msd box? If so, can I run it into the tach output without using a tach addapter like the auto gauge line of tachs? Thanks.
