Intermitent WW problems on 88GTA
Intermitent WW problems on 88GTA
I'm still having problems with the windshield wipers on my 88 GTA. When they are turned on, the blades only lift about an inch. If you smack the plastic cover on the WW motor assembly, they start working normally, for some period of time. Inside this plastic cover is a circuit board that controls all the wipers' actions. I also understand there is a circuit breaker in the cover as well (on the circuit board??). Has anyone else had this problem & what was the fix?? Can you do something yourself to examine & repair the circuit board? Also, this problem has surfaced since cold weather, so maybe this problem is temperature sensative. Any thoughts?

Pull the circuit board out and clean all of the electrical contacts, including the ones on the switch that the plastic cam actuates. Also, check for an intermittant connection in the wire & plug that goes between the motor & the control box.

Tim: Thanks for your suggestions. Do you have any further advice or specifics relative to taking apart the cam assembly and/or removal of the circuit board from the cover? It sounds like you've had this apart before. These things always look like you could just as easily destroy them taking them apart. Any other "finer points" that I should be aware of?

As a last resort, you could replace the circuit board. I don't know if you can replace it by itself, or if you need to replace the entire cover. I got a washer pump, with a circuit board in it, brand new, for my daily beater, for $17.95 from Autozone. BTW, I also have an 88GTA, but so far no probs with the wipers.

The ground for the entire thing is a little brass strap that goes across one of the rubber bushings. Over time, the rubber compresses, the strap loses its connection to either the motor or the firewall, and you suddenly have problems. I've had several cars including my 83, F cars and others, that have gone through this.
Run a wire from any convenient screw on the motor body to any convenient screw on the firewall, and see if that makes a difference.
