what do resistors do?

I know they are little spring like things, but what do they do? Do they control the amount of electricity that flows through or what?

They're not springs, I think they're made of carbon. The spring-like things are coils or inductors. Resistors control the amount of current like you said. The bigger the resistor (not its size, but its value in ohms) the less current is allows thru it. The physical size of the resistor determines how much wattage it can handle.
