Inconsistent no idle........

I have a 1991 TA 305 TPI. The other day i started the car and it would not idle, period. I started it five or six times and then finally, it idled at about 500 rpms, very low. By the time i arrived at my destination, it was idling fine. Why does my car do this...mainly, why so inconsistent. It will be fine for a week, and then one time it just has a fit. The TPS is new and adjusted, and the IAC is fairly new and adjusted....it is cold here, and my car cranks extra long to start, i hate it. Could my problem be linked to this?

I was also wondering about a new ECM. I can get a remanufactured one at NAPA for like 110. Will it work??? How much does the computer need to know, it knows my engine size but what else????? Is it made specifically for my car?? While I am on the subject, what other kinds of mods can i do to the electrical system/computer.

Thanks for your help.

Maybe an injector is leaking - do an injector leakdown test......

A leaky injector leaks fuel through the nozzle when its coil is not energized. Usa a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the fuel pressure after the motor has been turned off. The pressure should drop slowly, over a period of 20 minutes to 1/2 hour. If it drops off quickly, the injectors, the fuel pressure regulator, or the fuel pump may be leaking. Pulling the injector rails & pressurizing the fuel system & watching the injector tips is another way of verifying that the injectors are not leaking.
