Wiring harness for gauges???

I have a '91 RS and I was wanting to know if the gauges are hooked up through the computer? I know a guy that says he has taken the computer and wiring harness out of 3 different 3rd gens and it does not affect the gauges...that they are not wired through the computer. The only thing is that the ones he did were all pre '89. None with the newer style gauge cluster. My car is carburated now and I want to take the wiring harness and computer out.

The only gauge that is controlled by the computer is the speedometer. The computer has a speed buffer built into it that the VSS supplies pulses to. The speed buffer outputs a 4000 pulse per mile signal to the speedo, and a 2000 pulse per mile signal to the cruies control module. You could leave the computer installed with the power, the VSS, and the speedo (and cruise control, if you have it) connected to it, or remove the computer completely and get a speed buffer module for a digital dash F body ('84 - '84 Berlinetta, or ?? year T/A), and use it to drive the speedo & cruise module from your existing VSS.

One other thing. I have a T-56 six speed and ever since this tranny has been in the car, the speedo has not been hooked up because I was not sure if it would work or not...or even how to hook it up.

What's plugging the hole where the VSS normally goes in the T56? Maybe there is a VSS mounted to the trans, already. Connect your harness VSS plug to the VSS on the transmission - you may need a different style plug. Polarity does not matter with the two wires. The VSS drive / driven gears may also need to be changed to calibrate the speedo correctly.
