Your motor is either on it's way out or clogged with dust n crap.

Next time it doesn't work, try this: pop the hood and rap on the motor with something hard (I used the butt of my knife). That should get it turning if it's the same problem I had (intermittent functionality, sometimes suddenly coming on if I went over a speedbump or something).
As a temporary fix to get me through a sweltering summer, I took the motor out and used compressed air to blow all the dust and dirt out of the motor and the squirrel cage (and there's a lot in there!) and put a drop of oil on the spindle. That helped for a couple months, then it started doing it again.
Eventually, I replaced the motor with a $60 ACDelco motor and the problem went away.
