Fuel and Volt gauge

Ok, My volt gauge does not work at all and my Fuel gauge takes forever to show the level of gas in the car. I replaced the whole instrument cluster with a new one and both gauges worked when when they were hooked up with out the cluster screwed in or steering wheel bolted back up. After I got everything put back together the same problem came back. Volt gauge not working and fuel gauge slowly reading the level of gas.

Does this sound like a short or is this a common problem.

My car is an 89 IROC 305 TBI. The only electrics are door locks and hatch realease.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Phil

I don't know that this is any help, but my volt meter never worked. I have no real need for it, and never looked into why it wasn't working.

My stock gas gauge would read way over F, until it got to about 1/2 tank, then it would drop and read normally. My new Autometer gauge does exactly the same thing. It might be the sender in the tank or the connection may be gunked up and causeing problems... it works on resistance.

Now Neither of the gauges are working. The volt gauge is pegged to the bottom and the gas gauge is pegged to the top. I have taken the dash apart and can't seem to find a short any where. I guess I will need to take it in and have it diagnosed.

Actually, hold out a few more days. I'm serious about this, the gas gauge doesn't act normally after you pull it out and put it back in at first. It may sound wierd, I know. And you might want to have a gallon of gas handy, but others may back me up too on this one. Almost like it has to learn again once it's back in...
