Wiring in lights

I went out and got me some LEDs to put in the vents. I thought it looked pretty cool. So, After getting a few. I thought I would now try to figure out how to wire them up. I figure I need to wire them into something, so I am thinking the cig. lighter. Just tack it onto those wires. Then, run the hot up to a switch, through a small resistor depending upon the number of LEDs and their voltage capacity. Then, just ground it on some metal part up in the dash.

That was the first idea. The second is to wire it up so that the LEDs will come on when the headlights are turned on. if I chose to go that route. Where would I splice into so that I would get power only when those are on? I would think it would be into the dash lights, but where are the wires that run those particular lights?

If anyone would suggest which method they think would be better, along with how I would wire up the second option, I would appriciate it.

Thanks

Well, so far I have got the wire run in the vent ducts. That took almost an hour!
Anyway, I still need to figure out how to get those vent covers off. I cannot get in behind the ones on the driver's and pass. sides by the windows.

if there's no screws in the side, then you should be able to gently pry them out.they usually just snap in and out.but you know plastic can be.good luck.
