V8 tach into a V6 car?
can i put a tach out of a V8 car in a V6. i know the V6 wont work a V8(car is v6 now a V8). does the tach go through the ECM? or is it independent like the gauges? if i can swap them out, how do i go about it? thanks. i posted earlier but no replies.

If a V8 drives a V6 tach, the tach will read 25% high. With a V8, there are 4 pulses per revolution of the crank from the ignition system, while a V6 outputs only 3 pulses per revolution.

You could probably modify the tach circuit to recalibrate the frequency to voltage converter for a different number of cylinders, but I have never actually tried to do it. Probably easier to get a tach for a V6.

The tach has nothing to do with the ECM. It has a signal wire that goes to the distributor. You will need either an aftermarket, or a V6 tach to go with a V6 engine.
