electronic hatch release doesn't work on Firebird

I have a 1988 GTA with a digital dash and the electronic hatch release button mounted on the dash. I have replaced the switch and it still doesn't work. I have a button on my Clifford alarm remote that pops it and it works. So I know that the thing works. What could be wrong? This started to happen when my emergency brake light indicator on the dash went out. Does this have something to do with it? I don't want to have to replace the brake light bulb behind gthe dash because it's a PITA. I had to do this before when the Service Engine Soon light burnt out. The only way I could open the hatch is throught the remote and the key.

The hatch switch operates a relay that is grounded through the PRNDL switch and the starter solenoid, when the PRNDL switch is in P or N. This prevents the hatch from being opened when the PRNDL switch is in R,D,2, or 1. Check the operation of the relay - it is located in the center console in Camaros - I'm not sure if it's in the same location in a GTA. If a starter disable relay was recently installed, this may be breaking the grounding path for the hatch relay coil. If that is the case, move the starter disable relay upstream of where the hatch relay coil taps into the wire going to the PRNDL switch - place it between the ignition start switch and the hatch coil / PRNDL switch.
