Computer Type?

I hooked a code reader up to my terminal and it says it's not responding, but I can jumper it and get the code. The reader works just not with this car. The car have over 200,000 miles... Chances that the motor is changed is pretty good. The code reader wants to know the 8th and fourth digit of the vin number. What are my options to find a type on the computer to match it up to a year? Are maybe some of the pins different on this terminal from other years? BTW it's an 87 ta tpi.

The 4th digit should be an "I" for 87, I know the 85 is an "F" but they skipped either "g" or "h" in 86, and the eighth digit is an "F".

I know the vin for my car itself, but I'm not sure that the engine and computer are from the same car? Is there anyway to tell that, by maybe number or the block, heads, or computer itself? Also does anyone know if the pins for all the tpi computer terminals were the same? Maybe that's was throwing it?

Doesn't matter what year the ECM is, what matters is the PROM and what year it is. You would have to open up the ECM and look at the PROM to get the #, then call the dealer and find out if he can help you out with looking up what year it was produced. Many cars used the same ECM just a different PROM, (Hell I got my ECM out of an 87 Astro Van... go figure). As for the wiring for TPI cars, the 85 is in a class by itself, the 86-89's are wired the same, and the 90-92's are wired the same.

Great... Thanks. I'll give that a try and see what I can come up with. Maybe I just need to check the continuity of the terminal while I'm I have the ecu out.
