Is it worth getting a radar detector?

Hey guys I was on the highway yesterday and I realized how much less easier it would be to drive with a radar detector THAT WORKS. I remember seeing one in Pep Boys, it was a Cobra 10 Band with a bunch of other stuff for about 100 bux. I was thinking of whether or not I should get it and will it work or not. Is a 10 band good enough? It has all the major bands a regular one would have but then it has emergency bands and stuff. Is there anything that is invisible to radar detectors that could bring me down? If there is, how many of them are out there. Let me know so I can buy this and not have to worry about cops hiding around.

For the most part radar detectors are only good for telling you you're busted. If you drive fast a lot, you'll get tickets with or without one.

On the other hand, I can think of three or four incidents where a radar detector has positively saved me from getting a ticket.

I had one a loooong time ago, and tossed it and drove for years without one. I bought a cheapie from Wal-Mart a few weeks ago for a long trip I was taking and it's very good for finding banks and grocery stores.

Well..if an unmarked car paces you-and you don't notice-then he'll instant on you--you won't get that til it's too late. Some states also use helicopters to pace cars and then call ground units. You're better off getting a good radar--and still be cautious! Can't hurt--plus it also helps when you don't drive like an a$$hole either!--so as not to attract attention to yourself.
sorry--I'm not sure if I gave you the answer you're looking for.

To give a full explanation, I really wanna know where they are hiding. I've never seen officers go out of there way over here to follow people unmarked, and absolutely never seen a helicopter follow ANYONE for something dumb like speeding. I just want a radar detector that will pick out the cops from behind the dividers and such.

Well for 100$ I'm sure it is as good as any other 100$ detector BUT I've been told the ONLY one to consider is the Valentine One, look for ads in Car and Driver.... I think it is 250$ though

even a crappy radar detector will save you sometimes, such as when stupid cops drive around with their radar on all the time.. sure, you wont always get the ones that have set up speed traps, but you will know quite often when theres cops around at least, and you can correct your speed accordingly.. seeing as a ticket is going to cost around a hundred anyway, you might as well pick up the detector.. if it saves you once, its worth its money.. plus you are much more aware of where cops are.. so i'd say go for it

In my experience with 5 different radar detectors of my own and a $hit load of my friends, the $100 ones aren’t worth it. Expect to pay a minimum of $200 for one that worth you money.

I think they will come in handy quite often, depending on the way you drive. But here i know they use both laser and or radar to determine your speed. Alot of the cheapo's will only pickup on the radar. If your only driving on 1 or 2 points then yeah i would recomend one but get a good one thats gonna be worth the $ in the long run.

I bought a $100 radar/laser detector with the VG-2 technology, I think it's a Uniden. (I don't remember for sure).

It works fine, but you still need to stay alert.

No radar detector is going to save you if you are just cruising along in :lala: :lala: land.

Cobra makes a few good ones, I have the 9200 with voice alert and radar, it was $100 but thats my cost at best buy since i work there...
It saves me all the time, I always use it and it always works good. It can see speed traps like 3 miles away, crazy stuff. it works best when a cop is hiding somwhere with his radar on and people are passing by, the detector always goes off way before you get there. even around turns and stuff... I highly recommend a detector. just get one with laser and possibly voice alert, any model cobra makes above 9200 is goina be good.

I had an Escort 7200 ($200) for about 2 years and in that time, I was never pulled over for speeding but for other various reasons (reckless driving, excessive acceleration, disturbing the peace). I did have a cheap one also but it almost cost me my drivers licence a couple of times. I would say that they aren't worth the money but if you do want to spend your money on one, then spend a few more $ and get a good one.
my $.02.
