Hatch Release and E-Brake Light

I read about this awhile ago but couldn't find the topic so I'm posting it myself...

I have an '88 GTA and when I press the button on the dash to release the hatch it makes a click noise from the back but doesn't actually release it. I noticed that while I am holding down the button the E-brake light comes on (in the instrument panel area). Anyone know what's going on??

The E brake light is grounded to turn it on, so, somehow, activating the hatch switch is grounding that circuit. The E brake switch must be closed for the hatch to open in a manual trans car - it grounds the relay coil.

On an auto, the hatch release relay coil is grounded through the PRNDL switch & the starter solenoid coil when the PRNDL switch is in P or N. Take a look in the console - the E brake switch or wire connecting to it may be shorted to the hatch release wiring or relay.
