80 amp or 100 amp alternator???

kind of a dumb question here but the really dumb question is the one not asked right so here it goes. I had a 100 amp alternator in my 84 Trans Am and the diode went bad. I went to Napa and bought a new Diode and I think it is for a stock alternator. is the diode what determines your ampage or is it a combo of the diode and voltage regulator??? basically whats makes an alternator a 100 amp alternator and can you simply just buy a part or 2 and upgrade your stock amp?? or do you just toss the old stock alternator and buy a 100 amp if thats what you would want.

The stator coil, the diodes, and the alternator's ability to dissipate heat determine the current output of the alternator. I believe that the stock alternators are rated at 105 amperes.

I believe that 105 amp is for the CS alts. An 1984 would most likely be a 94 amp SI.

the amp I have in the car is not the stock amp I know. my old one went bad and I bought a new one that is used in the hwy patrol cars, I think in the Caprice squads. I was told they have more juice so whatever they have is what I have.

I installed the B4C police pkg (Caprice) alt in my '92 Z - it's rated @ 140 amperes & is quite a bit larger than the stock 105 amp alt.

My '92 Z runs high 12's on the motor alone & high 11's with 125 hp nitrous. Send me an E-mail if you would like me to send you the mods list.
