damn flickering lights

ok, i posted this in general tech also but here goes: ok, i can't take the flickering lights anymore. here is what's up. when the motor is cold my gauge is steady at around 14-15 volts. once it warms up a little my gauge starts bouncing back and forth between appprox. 11-15 volts.(really bad at night). a couple weeks ago i noticed that the alternator ground wire was pinched between the alternator and the bracket. i tried to push it out with a screwdriver and it started sparking. my question is: could a broken ground wire cause this?? or is my alternator to blame??
